Yale University seeks a dynamic, visionary, and collaborative leader as its next University Librarian.

One of the world’s leading research libraries, the Yale University Library (YUL) provides outstanding support for teaching, learning, and research, for Yale and the global community. YUL comprises nearly 15 million volumes (in all media), employs over 500 staff, and has an annual operating budget of about $147 million. YUL, housed in 15 libraries, including the Sterling Memorial Library, Bass Library, Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, and the Harvey Cushing/John Hay Whitney Medical Library, is a catalyst for intellectual and cultural exploration and supports the educational mission of Yale College, the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and the professional schools. It is innovative, collaborative, and purposeful in expanding accessibility and the use of collections, leveraging technology, developing staff expertise, and stewarding its collections and storied spaces.

The next University Librarian will join Yale at a propitious moment. In the last decade, nearly every library facility has been renovated; the few projects remaining are on schedule for completion in Summer 2020. On top of its world-leading print collections, YUL has established itself as an international leader in the digital humanities and digital preservation and has made significant contributions in special collection technologies.  Recent years have seen the strengthening of the library’s identity and business practice in a large—and previously more decentralized—context. As Yale prepares for its next capital campaign, it is certain that YUL will play a significant role.

The University Librarian will be a seasoned professional with a sophisticated understanding of the strategic, financial, and operational demands that are present in a complex unit. This individual will contribute to an evolving vision and strategy for YUL and will be eager to collaborate across the University. The successful candidate will possess a record of demonstrated commitment to scholarship and pedagogy across the full range of intellectual disciplines; appreciation for special collections and diverse media; clear understanding of the major challenges currently facing research universities; the ability to develop and maintain partnerships across and off campus; dedication to excellence in service; and a record of effectiveness in strengthening diversity, equity, and inclusion. Appointed by the President, the University Librarian will report to the Provost, with a direct reporting line to the Vice Provost for Collections and Scholarly Communication.

Academic credentials appropriate to the leadership of a modern research-intensive library are required; a doctoral or equivalent terminal degree is desirable.
