Position Summary:

The department is seeking a full professor with expertise in higher education to serve as the Niemi Endowed Professor.  The qualified candidate will have a record of outstanding scholarship, teaching, and service in higher education. 

Responsibilities:

  • Contribute in the areas of scholarly productivity; grant procurement; graduate student mentorship; thesis/project direction; university, college, and departmental committee service; and the establishment of partnerships with professional organizations within both the Illinois region and nationally. 
  • Participate in student recruitment and retention initiatives, develop innovative department/college curricular and programmatic initiatives.  
  • Teach graduate courses at the DeKalb and Naperville campuses and online.

Required Qualifications:

  • Earned doctorate in higher education or a closely related field.
  • Academic experience commensurate with the rank of full professor.
  • Evidence of successful professional experience as a practitioner/educator in higher education administration, student affairs, or community college administration.
  • Evidence of commitment equity-minded pedagogical practices and ability to work effectively with historically underrepresented or marginalized students.
  • Evidence of experience in the use of technologies in teaching adult learners.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Expertise in the areas of leadership, organizational change, minority-serving institutions, social justice, and/or student success for historically underrepresented or marginalized student populations.
  • Teaching and scholarly record in the areas of assessment, evaluation, and/or quantitative research methods.
  • Evidence of experience in mentoring and advising graduate students and serving as a dissertation chair.
  • Five years+ of practitioner’s experience in higher education administration; and leadership in state, regional, national, and international professional associations.

Salary: Competitive and dependent upon qualifications and experience.

Effective Date of Employment: August 16, 2020. Nine-month appointment on a tenure track. Summer teaching opportunities are plentiful due to the year-round nature of our doctoral programs.

Department, University, and Community Description:The department consists of the Higher Education and Student Affairs Program and the Counseling program.  The Higher Education and Student Affairs program offers an Ed.D in Higher Education and an M.S.Ed. in Higher Education and Student Affairs.

Northern Illinois University is a comprehensive research university offering programs from the baccalaureate through the doctorate. Colleges include business, education, engineering and engineering technology, law, liberal arts and sciences, health and human sciences, and visual and performing arts. On-campus enrollment is approximately 18,000 students. The university also offers more than 200 extension courses each semester to students in communities throughout northern Illinois.

The main campus is located in DeKalb, 65 miles west of Chicago's "Loop" and 40 miles southeast of Rockford with three education centers in Hoffman Estates, Rockford, and Naperville. DeKalb/Sycamore, with a population of about 50,000, is a modern paradox, a rural/urban community. It is simultaneously recognized for its manufacturing and rich farmlands. The site of the first manufacture of barbed wire and the development of hybrid seed corn are evidence of its diversified history. The blend of industry and agriculture, coupled with the cultural and recreational facilities of the university and supplemented by easy access to Chicago and Rockford, provide an enjoyable environment in which to live.
