Vice Chancellor, Equity and Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer

Vice Chancellor, Equity and Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer

University of Massachusetts Amherst

Amherst, Massachusetts

The University of Massachusetts Amherst (UMass Amherst or UMass) seeks a strategic leader and skillful collaborator to serve as the University’s Vice Chancellor, Equity and Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer (VCEI/CDO). Leading the Office of Equity and Inclusion and reporting to the Chancellor, the VCEI/CDO will work across all academic and business units to help each achieve its specific diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) goals, broadly strengthen a culture of inclusive excellence, and help the institution realize its potential to become a national DEI leader.

The University of Massachusetts Amherst is one of the nation's top public universities, an R1 research university, and the flagship of the University of Massachusetts system. The institution is not only distinguished by the excellence and breadth of the University’s activities across its units, but also for its forward-thinking and socially conscious programs, services and policies.

UMass Amherst’s profound legacy of and commitment to social justice has extended across generations and spanned disciplines. Born of a radical vision that any deserving citizen of Massachusetts, regardless of wealth or social status, should have access to higher education, the University of Massachusetts Amherst remains firmly grounded in its land-grant mission and broadly seeks to instill in students an enduring commitment to the public good, including the creation of a more just world.

The Vice Chancellor, Equity and Inclusion and Chief Diversity Officer role is key for UMass Amherst’s next institutional chapter. Joining a supportive leadership team in the Chancellor’s office, the new VCEI/CDO is expected to partner closely with and advise leaders across the University on unit-specific responsibilities and goals, connecting them with the resources, training, and strategies they need to carry out their DEI work and produce clearly defined outcomes. Toward this end, the successful VCEI/CDO candidate will be a strong relationship builder, an excellent communicator, and a DEI advocate adept at maneuvering in a highly matrixed organizational environment. They will work closely with the Chancellor and Provost to review programs, services, resources, and current issues that impact the University’s progress on its diversity, equity, and inclusion goals. They will continue to build and establish the Office of Equity and Inclusion, which includes five staff members and multiple reporting lines.
