Academic Coordinator I or II, Research and Evaluation Specialist

The Center for Research on Educational Equity, Assessment & Teaching Excellence (CREATE) seeks to employ a variable time (50% -100%) Academic Coordinator I or Academic Coordinator II to work closely with CREATE’s Director, Associate Director, and Co-Director of Research and Evaluation to shape, frame, and conduct the Research and Evaluation plans for CREATE as a whole, and more specifically for the CREATE STEM Success Initiative (CSSI). The Academic Coordinator will consult on, design, oversee, and/or conduct research and evaluation projects relating to education, with a focus on K-20 STEM education. 

The goals of the position are to 1) increase the visibility and quantity of STEM outreach from UC San Diego faculty, staff, and student groups through supporting the work driven by these groups over the academic year and summer; 2) connect such groups to relevant and historically distant communities from the campus; and 3) catalyze/create new opportunities to build needed STEM programs to excite and educate K-20 students.

Job Requirements

  • Responsible for working both collaboratively and independently on grants and grant proposals with CREATE and UC San Diego faculty, on work consistent with CSSI goals and aims.
  • Responsible for working both collaboratively and independently on evaluation projects for campus faculty and programs as well as K-14 entities (including districts and community education-related entities).
  • Asked to liaise and work with a diverse set of individuals, including UC San Diego faculty, university administration, K-14 administration, K-14 educators, and community K-14 entities focused on both formal and informal learning.
  • Asked to analyze program-related data and present/disseminate the results of the analysis in various formats, including reports to stakeholders, reports to CREATE/CSSI, conference presentations/talks, book chapters, and articles in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Able to multi-task in juggling several projects at once, including projects at different stages, with different types of design, levels of involvement, stakeholders, reporting requirements, etc.
  • Highly sensitive to racially and ethnically diverse communities, and in particular those serving low-income, first-generation youth and families, immigrant/refugee communities, and linguistically diverse communities. Dual language ability (Spanish-English) is considered a plus.
  • Strongly focused on issues concerning increasing educational and social equity and mobility for all students/communities.

A Ph.D. or Ed.D. is required for this position preferably with a degree in education, psychology, sociology, or related social science fields. A specialization or sub-specialization in quantitative methods and/or evaluation or evidence of work experience equivalent to such a specialization or sub-specialization is required. In particular, expertise with research and evaluation design, methods, and analysis (with particular emphasis on quantitative techniques) are required.
Quantitative specifics: Must have strong skills with: a) manipulation techniques for both large and small data sets (e.g. cleaning, coding, composite formation, etc.); b) creation, implementation, and analyses of surveys and basic assessment tools; c) selecting and conducting appropriate statistical analyses (using both descriptive and inferential statistics); and d) written, visual, and oral interpretation of analysis results. Preferred candidates will also have experience with more advanced quantitative statistical techniques, including longitudinal analysis techniques, factor analysis/PCA, and use of HLM techniques.

Qualitative specifics: Must be proficient with the creation and use of interview and focus group protocols. Must have experience with observation techniques, including field notes and the creation and use of observation rubrics, including more time- or event- structured techniques. Must have the ability to analyze qualitative data (interview, focus, and observation) using both grounded and theoretical analyses.

Additional specifics: Must be able to write grant proposals, evaluation sections of grant proposals, and whole proposals focused on project evaluations and/or design-based research. This includes working with appropriate stakeholders (collaborating faculty, administration, funders, etc.) to develop and describe research/evaluation plans along with associated timelines, budgets, and deliverables as appropriate. Must be able to work collaboratively with faculty and administration and must be able to lead and/or coordinate teams of staff, undergraduate-level, and graduate-level researchers.

Must be available Monday-Friday during regular working hours (8:00 am - 5: 00 pm), may be required to work weekends/evenings to meet workload demands.
