Assistant Dean for Administration and Resource Management

Brief Summary of Work for this Position

The Assistant Dean for Administration and Resource Management serves as the chief financial and human resources officer for the college, and is a member of the College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) leadership team responsible for assuming a lead coordinating role for strategic, capital, non-capital, and financial planning for the CHHS. The Assistant Dean is responsible for planning and oversight of the college resources and for ensuring that planning is based on an analytics approach – working with college administrators to analyze relevant data and develop short and long range financial and staffing models for strategic planning and decision-making. The Assistant Dean also collaborates with college administrators in short-term and long-term space and facility planning. In addition, this position supervises and manages the Business Service Team, which provides comprehensive resource management (personnel, financial, facilities) and business services support to the college and its functional units. This position reports to the Dean of the CHHS.

Minimum Requirements

Master’s degree in business or public administration, finance, data management, or a related field with at least three years of managerial experience in higher education OR a bachelor’s degree with at least seven years of progressively responsible experience in higher education financial administration and planning OR an equivalent combination of experience and education from which comparable skills and knowledge have been achieved

Required skills:

•Ability to lead and supervise the college’s business services staff through two-way communication and a team-based approach

•Excellent analytic and problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret and communicate technical material to a variety of audiences orally and in writing

•Understanding of university resource needs

•Understanding of university funding models

•Ability to understand and utilize modeling and analytic techniques to develop financial and enrollment projections

•Experience with financial and data-management software and the ability to learn new systems as they are implemented by the campus

Preferred formal education, professional skills and work experience

• Fundamental knowledge and understanding of the organizational structure of a university

• Familiarity with budget processes and policies in the University of North Carolina System

• Familiarity with Banner Finance and Banner HR reporting systems

• Demonstrated experience of effectively working in a matrix organization

• Five years’ experience with EHRA and SHRA position management

The overarching goal of the College of Health & Human Services (CHHS) is to help individuals, families and communities live healthier, more prosperous and more productive lives. CHHS strives to accomplish this goal through excellence in teaching, scholarship and service. To achieve this excellence, the faculty and staff are committed to responsible stewardship of the resources allocated to the CHHS. The CHHS has a permanent operating budget of $22M, over 4,000 undergraduate and graduate students, and approximately 175 permanent employees organized in the following units: (1) the Office of the Dean (2) the School of Nursing, (3) the School of Social Work, (4) the School of Health and Applied Human Sciences, (5) Academic and Administrative Support Teams (Shared Services Teams for Business, Student Success, Academic Operations, Marketing and Communications, Advancement, and Research/Innovation Support), and (6) Centers (Center for Healthy Communities and Center for Clinical Research Workforce Development). These units and its programs and faculty are currently housed in four buildings on the UNCW campus: McNeill Hall, Trask Coliseum, Hanover Hall, and the Nixon Annex. By fall 2020, UNCW’s newest academic facility – Veteran’s Hall – will open and serve as a 5th location for the College of Health and Human Services.

The College of Health and Human Services was created in July 2010 to provide UNCW with a new mechanism to link and focus its health-related research, professional continuing education, and health knowledge dissemination and application. In the formative stage of development, the CHHS is currently home to three professional schools: School of Health and Applied Human Sciences, School of Nursing, and School of Social Work.
