Assistant or Associate Professor - Autonomous Systems Policy

Assistant or Associate Professor - Autonomous Systems Policy

The Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, Syracuse University, seeks to hire a social scientist with expertise in the regulation, use, and social impacts of autonomous systems and emerging technologies at the rank of assistant or associate professor. This recruitment is part of an ambitious Invest Syracuse Cluster Hire Initiative in the broad area of Artificial Intelligence and Autonomous Systems. As an integral part of this investment, Syracuse University will recruit multiple candidates for faculty positions for a research cluster in the focus area of Autonomous Systems and Artificial Intelligence. Faculty hired into these positions will build on our existing strengths in the focus area and will participate in an organized research cluster that spans multiple departments in the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, the College of Law, the College of Engineering and Computer Science, and the School of Information Studies. This is a tenure-track appointment. Ph.D. required at time of appointment.

We seek a social scientist whose research focuses on either the policy needs or the social impacts of autonomous systems – driverless vehicles, unmanned aerial vehicles, pilotless ships and submarines, and so on. We expect to hire a scholar poised to make a significant contribution to deeper understandings of and suggestions for the policies and frameworks that will and should shape the development, use, and impacts of these systems. We are especially interested in candidates who connect their research to one or more of the following related themes: technology policy and regulation; transportation policy; transportation infrastructure; privacy and surveillance concerns; artificial intelligence; international security and law; the environmental impacts of emerging technologies; the future of work and mobility, particularly for marginalized communities; society and technology; and urban and regional planning.

Candidates should demonstrate clear evidence of a strong research program moving forward and significant promise in teaching at both advanced and introductory levels. Applications from candidates who study autonomous systems in a comparative framework and from an interdisciplinary perspective are especially welcome. The ideal candidate will see opportunities to engage with existing strengths across the Maxwell School and share its commitment to socially relevant scholarship oriented toward citizenship and public engagement. The Maxwell School seeks candidates whose research, teaching, and/or lived experiences has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion not only in higher education but also in the emerging fields associated with autonomous systems.

The successful candidate will play a key role in the Autonomous Systems Policy Institute (ASPI), which is housed in the Maxwell School and centers on interdisciplinary scholarship and teaching related to the design, policy, and social implications of autonomous systems. Besides contributing to ASPI’s research and teaching, we seek a scholar who might also contribute to initiatives across the Maxwell School. Opportunities for interdisciplinary research include the Center for Environmental Policy and Administration; the Center for Policy Research; the Aging Studies Institute; and the Program for the Advancement of Research on Conflict and Cooperation. Across Syracuse University, the Maxwell School maintains collaborative links to schools and programs ranging from law and engineering to design and architecture.

The Maxwell School strongly values excellent teaching, and the successful candidate will be expected to teach both undergraduate and graduate courses. Faculty members normally teach two courses per semester. The successful candidate will be housed in his/her disciplinary department.
