THE SEARCH

The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) seeks an Assistant Dean of Finance and Administration at its School of Dentistry. (UMB will consider the title of “Associate Dean,” depending on the candidate’s experience.) This role will provide operational, financial, and administrative leadership for a top-ranked school at UMB.

Founded in 1807, UMB’s 71-acre research and technology complex encompasses 65 buildings in West Baltimore near the Inner Harbor. UMB is Maryland's only public health, law, and human services university. Seven professional and graduate schools educate the majority of the state's physicians, graduate nurses, dentists, lawyers, social workers, and pharmacists.

The University of Maryland School of Dentistry (UMSOD) seeks to graduate exceptional oral health care professionals, contribute to the scientific basis of treatments for diseases of the orofacial complex, and deliver comprehensive dental care. UMSOD accomplishments promote, maintain, and improve the overall health of the people within Maryland and have a national and international impact.

Reporting to the Dean of the School of Dentistry, the Assistant Dean currently oversees budget/resource management, accounting, business services, research administration, and human resource functions. The Assistant Dean will join a university with a dynamic vision enunciated at the senior leadership levels of UMSOD and the University. This is an exciting opportunity for an astute, entrepreneurial and energetic individual to continue to foster a culture of professionalism, financial sustainability, and strategic thinking within the administration of the school. The selected individual will lead the continuous improvement of the school’s financial and operational management.

The Assistant Dean will be a forward-thinking, strategic, and flexible leader who can deal with today’s rapidly changing research, dental care, and financial environments. Demonstrated experience in developing and implementing operational effectiveness in clinical practice programs is strongly desired. The ideal candidate will be able to formulate long-range financial projections and plans, and be able to modify them thoughtfully to address changes in a fluid environment. Active participation in the school’s efforts to diversify and generate new revenue streams will be an area of emphasis. This individual will develop a comprehensive understanding of all major internal and external programs of the school and work together with stakeholders and other members of the administration to manage the budget. Strong interpersonal skills, including verbal and written communication skills and a collegial personality are a must.

Prospective candidates for this position could come from several career paths, such as: a business or finance officer in a university central administration; a chief operating or finance officer of a health sciences school in a research university; the administrator of an academic or clinical unit in a health sciences school or college; or the chief operating or financial officer of a faculty practice plan.
