Assistant Professor of Music Education—Choral, Tenure Track

Description

The Division of Music in the Meadows School of the Arts at Southern Methodist University seeks an exceptional teacher/scholar/clinician in the area of choral music education for a full-time tenure-track appointment at the Assistant Professor level, beginning August 2020 (position number 00006331).

Expectations

The candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate music education classes; supervise field experiences and student teaching; pursue an agenda of research, scholarship, and creative work consistent with the candidate’s expertise and interests in choral music education; and possibly, conduct a choir. Additional responsibilities may include advising undergraduate and graduate students; serving as adviser or committee member for graduate theses; collaborating with faculty and staff colleagues in recruiting undergraduate and graduate students; engaging in professional and university service; and building and maintaining professional relationships with choral directors in area schools.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. in Music Education completed by 1 August 2020
  • Minimum three years successful experience as a choral director in public schools at the secondary level
  • Evidence and potential of scholarly research activity
  • Presentations at state, national, and/or international conferences on topics related to choral music leading to articles in appropriate publications
  • Demonstrated successful teaching at the collegiate level preferred
  • Working knowledge of approaches to choral music education practice, theory and research
  • Record of professional/service activities in music education, such as board or committee service
  • Current professional memberships in organizations related to the field of choral music education
  • Aptitude for embracing diversity in individuals, perspectives, and musical styles
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
