Assistant Professor – Islam

The Department of Religion in the College of Arts and Sciences at Syracuse University invites applications for a tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor of Religion, to begin August 2020. We seek a colleague trained in the academic study of religion who specializes in modern and/or contemporary Islam and Muslim cultures, in any geographical region but especially in Africa, Asia, or the Americas.

We seek in particular a colleague whose research and teaching in Islam intersects with studies in one or more of the following: gender and sexuality, race and ethnicity, politics and aesthetics.

The successful candidate will make significant contributions to our undergraduate and graduate curricula. At the undergraduate level, they will be able to teach across a broad range of Islamic studies, beyond their area of specialization, and on topics in the study of religion related to their research interests. At the graduate level, they will contribute (in addition to their specialization in Islam) to exploring religion in modern and/or contemporary contexts, and to teaching methods and theories in the study of religion.

Application should be made online at http://www.sujobopps.com/postings/80802 and should consist of a letter of application, a curriculum vitae, sample syllabi or detailed course proposals, transcripts, and contact information for three (3) letters of recommendation.

Applications will be reviewed beginning October 1st, 2019 and will continue until an appointment is made.

Information about the Department of Religion, its structure and its curricula, is posted on our website: http://religion.syr.edu.
