The College of Law is seeking the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs (ADSA). Reporting directly to the Dean of the College, the ADSA provides administrative oversight, management and support for the College’s JD, joint JD, LLM and 3+3 programs.  The ADSA oversees two of the College's three student and enrollment services units, which includes providing leadership to the College's Career Services Department. The College of Law is seeking candidates who have the ability to contribute in meaningful ways to the diversity and intercultural goals of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

 

Position Duties & Responsibilities

• Provides counsel to the Dean. Participates in strategic planning and assessment efforts of the College.

• Works with associate deans, directors, faculty within the college and the larger university community to address issues, facilitate change, and develop solutions.

• Provides leadership, vision, and management for the units to encourage the development of programs and services that promote student success and professional development.

• Ensures that each unit meets and exceeds its mission and goals.

• Oversees the administration of the College's numerous degree programs by interpreting, communicating, and ensuring compliance with the academic policies and procedures of the university, college, and its accrediting agencies.

• Provides direct oversight and supervision for one director, and two administrative support staff; s/he indirectly supervises one assistant director, one coordinator, and one advisor.

• Serves as Director of Diversity and Inclusion, working with the faculty committee on community and inclusion.  Works purposefully to garner the support and assistance of all to create a welcoming, accepting, supportive, and healthy community.

• Provides leadership, vision and oversight to the faculty, students and staff to advance the College's strategic goal of strengthening our commitment to a broadly diverse, inclusive, supportive and intellectually-engaged community

• Brings and supports programming to students, faculty and staff to promote the principles of diversity and inclusion.

• Oversees and coordinates the College's efforts on student wellness and mental health.

• Assists students with academic and non-academic issues and concerns. Works closely with them to not only identify concerns and craft solutions, but also to anticipate potential implications to bar admission and career goals particularly if issues persist.

• Investigates issues of non-compliance and implements strategies to achieve success.

• Develops solutions to issues raised by faculty, staff, and students using a comprehensive knowledge of college, university, and ABA policies and procedures. Coordinates inter-office responses and efforts.

• Assesses the effectiveness of programs and services. Compiles data for internal and external evaluation, assessment, and accreditation. Participates in the accreditation process as well as completes portions of evaluative tools designed to provide transparency.

• Collaborates with and influences the college community to promote student success and development.

• Oversees Registrar functions and records management; manages and performs all enrollment functions for as many as 500 students and collaborates with the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs on creating and overseeing class schedule.

• Plans and creates examination schedules for as many as 500 students, 30 faculty, 50 adjunct faculty, and staff. Determines class rank, dean's list and honors distinctions.

• Administers faculty teaching evaluations.

• Develops, implements, and oversees work flow processes and systems in support of unit efforts.

• Oversees and approves budgetary expenditures associated with administering the College’s first year, second year, transfer, 3+3, and LLM orientations, advising, and first-year support programs.

 

Qualifications

Education Requirements:

• J.D. from an accredited law school.

 

Required Experience:

• Experience in the practice of law or extensive experience with higher education or law school.

• Demonstrated leadership and administrative accomplishments in positions of increasing responsibility.

• Demonstrated commitment to the intellectual, professional, and personal development of a diverse student body.

• A history of working collaboratively with diverse constituencies.

• Direct responsibility for a broad range of student services functions. Experience with advising students, student organizations, crisis management, and policy development and implementation.

 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Excellent administrative, project management, supervisory, counseling and communication skills.

• Ability to interact and work collaboratively with a broad range of people and groups.

• Ability to assess and evaluate effectiveness, plan strategically, establish goals, and set priorities.

• Knowledge and understanding of issues affecting higher education.
