Supplemental Instruction Coordinator
Class Encore, UO’s primary supplemental instruction program, provides vital support for students in historically challenging courses and plays a vital role in the president's student success initiative. Small, free, peer-led study groups allow students to gather once a week outside of class to practice course concepts and strategies. Peer leaders attend the classes and design collaborative activities for each group meeting. The Supplemental Instruction Coordinator provides programmatic oversight, strategic direction, and continual program evaluation and improvement. The Coordinator also provides supervision and mentorship for over 25 student staff.
Through data review, literature review, and research of the best practices at other institutions, the Coordinator determines the most impactful courses to include in the program (typically gateway courses with high rates of Ds, Fs, and Ws). The Coordinator is responsible for recruiting faculty to participate in the program and works with them to provide supplemental instruction, taught by peer educators, for their classes.
The Coordinator will also develop policies and procedures that determine which participants to recruit and admit to the program. They will be responsible for executing their outreach and recruitment strategies that target student participants that will most benefit from the program.
This position is also responsible for recruiting, hiring, supervising, and training peer educators, and developing strategies to recruit a diverse pool of peer educators. This work includes designing and facilitating orientations and weekly professional development for peer educators, including trainings on culturally responsive pedagogy and creating a welcoming and inclusive learning environment. Additional responsibilities include maintaining records of services, reporting data on program use and effectiveness, managing the program budget, and participating in staff meetings and program evaluation.
The Coordinator must be culturally competent and able to work with first-generation, low-income, underrepresented, international, and transfer students. The position requires skill in addressing the needs of all students, from high performing to academically vulnerable. The Coordinator must also demonstrate respect for all individuals, welcome diversity among students and colleagues, and actively work toward an inclusive and welcoming workplace.
• Bachelor’s degree.
• Three years’ experience teaching in higher education or K-12 setting, including experience teaching, mentoring, or advising students from underrepresented backgrounds, including Hispanic/Latino, African American, Native American.
• Two years’ experience managing a program, providing administrative support for a program, or other relevant experience that involves managing records, program evaluation, data tracking, and/or participate recruitment.
