Dean of Temple-Rome

For more than 50 years, since the first group of 24 undergraduates and 12 graduate students arrived in 1966, Temple University Rome has provided students with an interdisciplinary, experiential and rigorous academic and cultural program that takes full advantage of the splendid historical and contemporary resources Rome and Italy have to offer. Temple University seeks a dean for this flagship international campus in Rome, one of the largest and longest-standing study abroad programs in Italy.

One of two overseas campuses of Temple University, Temple Rome serves as a conduit for the university to Italy, Europe, North Africa and the wider international community. As a global presence for the university, Temple Rome supports Main Campus faculty research, collaborations and connections throughout Italy; it also serves as a pipeline for student and faculty recruitment and institutional advancement. Every semester and summer session, 150 to 200 undergraduate and graduate students come to Temple Rome from the Main Campus in Philadelphia and more than 20 different colleges and universities.

The university seeks an experienced, collaborative and visionary professional to further Temple Rome’s recent trajectory, one marked by substantial expansions in enrollment, curriculum, internships, facilities and local initiatives, including the launch of the Temple Rome Board of Visitors. Reporting directly to the provost, the dean of Temple Rome will continue the momentum of recent years through deft leadership, developing, articulating and implementing a dynamic vision to cement the status of the campus as one of the world’s premier study-abroad programs. The dean will also play a key role in furthering Temple’s success in global education, making a significant impact on the lives of the university’s students and the university’s ability to have a positive effect on the world both now and into the future.

The ideal candidate will be an accomplished leader who not only has worked in higher education and understands academic culture, but also brings significant international experience and the relationships and insights that derive from that experience. The next dean will be an exceptional manager of people and programs, who is eager to engage with students, faculty, staff and donors to promote the continued excellence of Temple Rome. The candidate must be able to operate independently on an international campus, while collaborating closely with the Main Campus in Philadelphia. Experience in the management of complex organizations and forming effective partnerships with faculty and administrators across a global university is highly desired. A doctorate or terminal degree is preferred, as is proficiency in Italian.
