Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:00 am - 5:00 pm; Occasional early morning, night, or weekend work required

Essential Responsibilities

Reporting to the Executive Director of the Santos Manuel Student Union (SMSU), this position contributes to campus diversity and inclusion goals by providing leadership for, and advancement of programs affecting the quality of campus life for students of color, as well as underrepresented students. This position is accountable to carry out the vision of SMSU's diversity, equity, and inclusion goals. This position plans, implements, and assesses programs and initiatives to meet the diverse needs of our students by coordinating programs developed by the Affinity Centers including the Asian Pacific Islander Resource Center, Cross Cultural Center, First Peoples' Center, Pan-African Center, Queer and Transgender Resource Center, LatinX Center, and Women's Resource Center . The Assistant Director promotes persistence towards graduation through personal advisement, referrals and intervention, and community inclusion and outreach.

Responsibilities:

  • In consultation with the Executive Director, collaborate with key offices and academic departments to support the transition and successful integration of students of color, students from other underrepresented groups, and diverse populations into CSUSB.
  • Promote and assist in the development of policies, procedures and programs that assure the well-being and development of students of color and underrepresented students, affirm human dignity, and champion cultural pluralism across campus.
  • Provide operational leadership for the coordination of multicultural and international related programming, including but not limited to Black History Month, LatinX Month, Asian Awareness Month, Women's History Month, GLBT celebrations, First People and California Native American Week, and the Pow Wow.
  • Assist the Executive Director in assessing the educational and supportive needs of offices and departments.
  • Coordinate and advance the dialogue around race and sexual orientation through campus programs and conversation. Develop and maintain a robust team of trained student and staff facilitators, facilitate programming in and out of the classroom, and engage in education and training.
  • Create and implement programs and initiatives that promote increased multicultural competence and diversity awareness within the CSUSB community.
  • Other duties as assigned.

    Student Affairs Responsibilities:

  • Advise underrepresented students on cultural awareness and adaptation, personal advancement and academic success through outreach and development of ongoing relationships. Assess student needs, connect them to campus support networks, and provide guidance and support.
  • Promote and support students' integration into the region through trips, inter-institution connections, transportation, etc.
  • Advance the work of the Affinity Centers. Hire, train, and supervise Affinity Center student employees.
  • Serve as organizational and program advisor to students represented by the Affinity Centers. Support organizational needs and programming.
  • Coordinate and implement orientation programming for students to apprise them of current issues within the areas reflected by the Affinity Centers.
  • Ensure programs and initiatives within the area of responsibility are assessed regularly and improved with data driven decision making.
  • Assist with division-wide programs coordinated by the SMSU and the Division of Student Affairs, including an annual student leadership conference, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent in higher education, social justice education, counseling, student affairs, or related program is required.
  • A Master's degree is preferred
  • 3 -5 years of experience working with college students required, ideally in a student development or advising capacity.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of principles and practices of student development, social justice education, and the needs of diverse populations in higher education is required.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to initiate collaborative work with diverse students, faculty and staff.
  • Experience in student program development, budget management and contract negotiations.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence the creation, implementation, and management of a balanced array of programs which reflect students' interests and educational needs.
  • Proven ability to assess program impact on student learning, including use of quantitative and qualitative data.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule as needed to fulfill the job responsibilities.
