Vice President, Finance (“VP, Finance”)

The Opportunity

The Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, also known as Virginia Tech or VT, is a nationally-ranked public college and one of the premier research universities in the USA. Virginia Tech offers a technologically focused education across over 280 degree programs to more than 34,000 undergraduate and graduate students in fields ranging from engineering, to science, to business. Virginia Tech is ranked 5th in the nation for number of engineering graduates and managers a research portfolio of more than $531 million. In 2019, U.S. News & World Report ranked Virginia Tech number 76 among the nation’s best public universities.

As the principal financial officer of Virginia Tech, the VP, Finance will provide exceptional leadership, oversight and management to business and financial functions including budget and financial planning, capital assets and financial management, the controller’s office, the bursar, risk management, procurement, and treasury. The VP, Finance will establish goals for these functions, determine resources needed to meet these goals, assess performance, provide feedback and make strategic decisions.

The VP, Finance is a key member of the President’s Council, and will interact consistently, as well as advise and counsel, with the President, President’s Council, Board of Visitors of the university and other key internal and external stakeholders.

The ideal candidate is an expert in building and leading effective teams; spearheading change; ensuring accountability; a collaborative leader with a proven track record of increasingly complex administrative roles. S/He will demonstrate a commitment to valuing differences, solving issues through developing different perspectives and creative solutions, and partnering with the academic and research enterprises to ensure their continued success at Virginia Tech.

Virginia Tech has retained Korn Ferry, a national executive recruiting firm, to assist with this search.
