ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT OF NUTRITIONAL SCIENCES:
The mission of the TCU Department of Nutritional Sciences is to provide a distinctive program of study in all areas of nutrition and dietetics within a traditional liberal arts setting. The faculty of the department affirm their commitment to the education of broadly informed, scientifically competent, self-educating, and ethically responsible professionals who are capable of entering successful careers in nutrition and dietetics and are also cognizant of the needs of the community and society at large.

The Department of Nutritional Sciences currently employs six full-time faculty members with a commitment to quality growth and approximately 100 undergraduates. This new hire will add an additional full-time faculty member to support the new graduate program, with plans for the first Master of Science students to graduate in May 2023. We collaborate closely in research and inter-professional education initiatives with faculty and students from the TCU College of Science and Engineering, the TCU College of Nursing and Health Sciences, the University of North Texas Health Science Center, and colleagues employed in other community health organizations.

We are a student-centered department committed to the teacher-scholar model. Teaching is central to our department’s mission; we hire faculty who are passionate about teaching and highly trained in their area of teaching specialty.

Research plays an integral role in the professional life of departmental faculty. Our research programs support our department mission and allow us to expose students to the process of food and nutrition science throughout the research process.

Advising and mentoring students are also critical faculty responsibilities that support our mission. Faculty members have an open-door policy to students, and students feel comfortable meeting with faculty outside of designated office hours.

Our department’s curriculum and all faculty-related policies have been developed via consensus of the faculty. We work together as a team, with the utmost respect and appreciation for all types and ways of contributing to our students and their success. Collegiality and teamwork have long been a hallmark of our department.

The Department of Nutritional Sciences is housed in the Annie Richardson Bass Building, which recently underwent a major renovation that now provides an inviting open area where students are encouraged to gather and collaborate.  Departmental teaching space includes two large teaching kitchens, a quantity foods laboratory, and a common area utilized for lectures and other large gatherings.  TCU’s library, including on-line resources and personnel, is considered a strength by the Nutritional Sciences faculty.
