The Department of Music at the University of California San Diego invites applications for an Associate Teaching Professor (formally “Lecturer With Security of Employment”) in the area of Jazz and Music of the African Diaspora to begin July 1, 2020. This appointment confers membership in the Academic Senate and tenure-paralleling security of employment. Individuals in this role are expected to provide outstanding teaching and educational leadership, and to engage in professional activity and service related to the pedagogical mission of the department and university.

Candidates for the position will be well versed in contemporary pedagogy in jazz, creative music, and music of the African diaspora, and be able to teach related topics, such as jazz history, theory, improvisation, composition and arranging, basic piano skills, ensembles, and private instrumental instruction, as well as to advise with student honors projects and recitals. The ideal candidate will have an internationally-recognized career as a performer or creative producer with either a completed M.A., M.F.A., D.M.A., or Ph.D., and/or at least five years of related teaching experience at the university level.

The Department especially seeks candidates who demonstrate strong or potential accomplishments in areas contributing to equity, diversity and inclusion, and a desire to play a leadership role in advancing UC San Diego's commitment to achieving excellence and diversity. The successful candidate will be expected to perform appropriate departmental and university service, and will feel at home in a department that nourishes musical creativity and innovation.

Salary is commensurate with qualifications and based on University of California pay scales.
