GENERAL DESCRIPTION:
The John Miller Burnam Classics Library at the University of Cincinnati seeks a forward-thinking Library Specialist who can work independently and collaboratively in Classics. Cincinnati’s Classics Collection is one of the world's largest and most distinguished with particular strengths in Greek and Latin philology, Aegean Bronze Age archaeology, and Latin palaeography. The position will support more than 75,000 patrons annually from within and outside the University community who consult the myriad of sub- disciplines in Classics that span multiple languages and five millennia of recorded history.

The incumbent is, together with the Head of the Library and the Classics Bibliographer, responsible for the maintenance, development, and use of the classics collection (275,000+ volumes) and for collaborating with all staff and student workers in the Classics Library as well as with other units within the University of Cincinnati Libraries, and with faculty, staff, students, and visiting scholars in the Classics Department, regarding matters of wide scope, including, but not limited to, bibliographic instruction, reference services, the curation of exhibitions, the creation of research guides, the processing of books, the maintenance of the Library’s stack floors, the hiring and supervision of student assistants, and budgetary and statistical analysis.

The incumbent supervises the work of the Library’s student workers, the circulation desk, and the maintenance of the Library’s stack floors as well as examines and analyzes vendor and catalog records for accuracy and completeness. Other responsibilities include assisting with the organization of events and digital scholarship endeavors, with the curation of exhibitions and the creation of instructional and promotional materials, as well as contributing to the Classics Library’s web page, blog, etc. The incumbent will also provide class instruction and specialized and individualized reference and research consultation to undergraduate and graduate students in the Classics Department, particularly to incoming students and as they complete their thesis requirements, and to faculty and visiting scholars and to lend his or her Classics background to the development and management of the Library’s collections. This is a permanent full-time position.

RELATIONSHIP AND AUTHORITY: Reports to the Head of the John Miller Burnam Classics Library.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Contributes to onsite and virtual exhibitions, and other forms of public outreach and assists the Head of the Library in providing instruction through workshops, seminars and bibliographic instruction sessions connected to individual classes, and individual consultation in the use of the Library’s resources. 
  • Assists the Classics Bibliographer in developing and managing collections in all formats, and in examining and analyzing vendor and catalog records for accuracy and completeness and assists the Head of the Library with budgetary issues (fund-raising activities as well as existing funds management).
  • Provides support for developing the digital profile of the Library's classics collections and for fostering collaborations with institutional partners, nationally and internationally.
  • Contributes to the Classics Library’s web tutorials, bibliographic guides, website, blog, and Instagram photo album.
  • Supervises and coordinates the work of the Library’s student assistants as it relates to recruitment, supervision, scheduling, budget and payroll, and the staffing of the Circulation desk.
  • Manages all circulation activities, including check-outs, check-ins, recalls, and holds. Responsible for fulfilling OhioLINK and ILL patron-initiated borrowing requests.
  • Manages the Library’s Stacks with regard to shelving, shelf-reading, orderliness, and shifting as needed.
  • Oversees office supplies, including ordering and the supply budget; maintains the Classics Library’s usage statistics; assists patrons in the use of audiovisual equipment, microfilm reader and scanners.
  • Performs new and additional tasks as needed to respond to changes in policies and procedures and to complete special projects.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in Classics or a related field.
  • Ability to read and comprehend at least four languages -- Ancient Greek, Latin and two modern languages, preferably German and French.
  • One year of supervisory (may include teaching) or managerial experience (overall responsibility for a unit).
  • A minimum of two years of experience conducting research in an academic research library, including the use of research tools in Classics, such as the Thesaurus Linguae Graecae, Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum, Inscriptiones Graecae, Thesaurus Linguae Latinae, Itinera, Tesserae, Zenon, Dyabola.
  • A minimum of two years of experience working with faculty, students, visiting scholars in an academic setting; for example, providing research assistance and class instruction, creating print and web-based instructional materials, curating exhibitions and organizing events in any of the subdisciplines of classical studies, such as classical philology, classical archaeology, ancient history, ancient philosophy, epigraphy, papyrology, etc., at an academic research library, archive, historical society, or university.
