Vice President, Research Administration

Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, seeks an accomplished individual to serve as its next Vice President, Research Administration (VP-RA) to provide leadership on regulatory and compliance requirements; effective development and implementation of institutional policies; and efficient delivery of services and programs throughout the lifecycle of pre-award, post-award, and regulatory oversight that positively impact research activities, accountability and compliance across the University.  An experienced change manager with experience in strategy and policy development, the next VP-RA will have an appreciation for the mission of the research enterprise at Rutgers University and the capacity to function in a highly complex, matrixed environment. 

 

A leading national research university and the state of New Jersey’s preeminent, comprehensive public institution of higher education, the University offers more than 300 research centers and institutes in its 31 undergraduate colleges and graduate and professional schools across four units: Rutgers University – New Brunswick, Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences (RBHS), Rutgers University – Newark, and Rutgers University – Camden.  With research a fundamental part of the university's mission, the Office of Research and Economic Development (ORED) aims to further the reach of Rutgers research and its impact on communities.  ORED’s research commercialization team successfully manages an active technology portfolio and supports researchers from conception to commercial viability.

 

As part of the Office of Research and Economic Development (ORED), the VP-RA provides leadership and management of critical research activities in the administration of all sponsored projects.  Reporting to the Senior Vice President of Research and Economic Development and jointly accountable to the Executive Vice President of Finance and Administration for financial management matters, highlighted and responsibilities of the VP-RA include:

  • Leading a customer-focused organization of over 110 employees, including the pre-award grants submission team, the post-award administration team, and the regulatory affairs team overseeing IRB, RCR, Research Integrity, Conflict of Interest and Export Control
  • Overseeing a budget of $10 million.
  • Enhancing systems and developing best practices to support the university research activities while ensuring high standards of compliance with local, state, and federal regulations;
  • Ensuring the effective administration of research-related technologies, overseeing research policies and processes, and advising on the effective integration of research systems
  • Overseeing all sponsored projects grant and contract submission and award data and reports
  •  
  • Streamlining processes through the refinement of roles and procedures, the appropriate use and implementation of technology, and analysis of the organizational structure and workflow;
  • Building and developing effective, high-functioning teams that provide supervision and mentorship to develop the team to operate at the highest levels of performance, efficiency, and integrity

 

The successful candidate will have Masters degree or greater, with ten (10) or more years of experience with research grants and administration. The successful candidate should be known for personal and professional integrity, excellent interpersonal skills as well as political astuteness and should be able to convey a sense of energy, openness and optimism with a collaborative yet decisive management style.
