An Invitation to Apply for

Chief Diversity Officer

Stony Brook University

Stony Brook, New York

Stony Brook University (Stony Brook), a comprehensive research university, seeks a dynamic and strategic Chief Diversity Officer (CDO). The next CDO will join the institution at a transformative time and will harness the energy and commitment of the community to further diversity, equity and inclusion as an institutional priority. Under the leadership of  President Samuel L. Stanley Jr. and facilitated by senior leaders, faculty, staff and students, Stony Brook developed a comprehensive diversity strategic plan that is currently underway. The CDO will play a pivotal role in implementing and refining the diversity plan, and will coordinate and empower the work of students, faculty, staff and colleagues across campus and beyond.

One of the four university centers in the SUNY system, Stony Brook was founded in 1957 and is a nationally and internationally respected research university and a member of the Association of American Universities. Stony Brook’s reach extends from its 1,039-acre campus on Long Island’s North Shore — encompassing the main academic areas, an 8,300-seat stadium and sports complex and Stony Brook Medicine (which includes five health sciences schools as well as Stony Brook University Hospital, Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, Stony Brook Children’s Hospital and a number of community-based healthcare settings) — to a Research and Development Park, four business incubators and the Stony Brook Southampton campus on Long Island’s East End. Internationally, Stony Brook has significant facilities or collaborations in South Korea, Kenya and Madagascar.

Located in the Office of the President and reporting to the Senior Vice President for Government and Community Relations/Chief Deputy to the President, the CDO is responsible for guiding efforts across Stony Brook University to conceptualize, assess and cultivate diversity as an institutional and educational resource. The CDO serves as a member of the President’s leadership team as well as on the University Council. In addition to serving as a senior administrator at Stony Brook, the CDO serves as part of a systemwide network of CDOs, coordinated by the SUNY system CDO, to support SUNY’s overall diversity goals.

The CDO will work collaboratively with offices across the Stony Brook campuses including but not limited to student affairs, academic affairs, human resources, enrollment management and admissions, to elevate inclusiveness and implement best practices related to diversity, equity and inclusion in such areas as the recruitment and retention of students as well as faculty and staff.

The successful candidate will be a creative and innovative leader with relevant experience in academic administration, scholarship or a related field. The CDO must have extensive knowledge of existing research and best practices to advance diversity, equity and inclusion in higher education. This role also requires the demonstrated ability to apply and contribute to national best practices, and a demonstrated appreciation for the values associated with diversity, equity and inclusion in higher education. The CDO must have well-developed skills in facilitating inclusive dialogues that enable positive growth, the capacity to translate strategic goals and set a course for implementation, and experience in institutional change management. The CDO must be able to work effectively with people at all different levels, including central and collegiate administration, faculty, students, alumni and the surrounding community.
