THE SEARCH

The Cal Poly Pomona Foundation, Inc. (“Foundation”), an auxiliary organization, seeks an innovative and experienced individual to serve as its next Executive Director (“ED”). The ED serves as the chief executive officer for the Foundation, and is responsible for all business development, operations, and financial activities that support California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (“Cal Poly Pomona”), a distinguished public university dedicated to an applied, hands-on approach to higher education. Reporting directly to the University Vice President for Administration, Finance & Strategic Development & Chief Financial Officer, with a dotted line report to the University President, the ED will oversee an operating budget totaling approximately $67 million, 250 staff, and approximately 874 part-time faculty and staff, and works in partnership with the university to align Foundation priorities with Cal Poly Pomona’s mission and strategic goals.

Cal Poly Pomona is one of two polytechnic universities in the 23-campus California State University System, and one of only seven polytechnic institutions nationally. With a diversity of degree programs in the arts, humanities, sciences, engineering, and professional disciplines, the university is well known for its learn-by-doing philosophy. Cal Poly Pomona is nestled in the beautiful San Gabriel Valley less than 30 miles east of Los Angeles at the intersection of Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties, the largest four counties in the State. It is within an hour’s drive of beaches, mountains, and desert. The largest employer in the region, the university is located in one of the most important commercial regions in Southern California, comprised of numerous manufacturing, warehouse, and retail businesses.

The university is noted for its scenic and historic 1,400-acre campus, which was once the winter ranch of cereal magnate W.K. Kellogg. The university’s nearly 26,000 students are enrolled in 51 baccalaureate and 30 master’s degree programs, 11 credential and certificate programs, and a doctorate in Educational Leadership Program. Students are taught by approximately 1,300 faculty. A Hispanic-Serving Institution, the university is ranked by U.S. News and World Report as the tenth most diverse in the western region, and the celebration of the diversity of its students, faculty, and staff is integral to the University’s identity. Cal Poly Pomona Foundation, Inc., established in 1966, provides integral support for the educational mission of the university by providing a wide range of essential services utilized by students, faculty, staff, administrators, alumni, and community partners. The Foundation is committed to providing the highest level of service and financial support while maintaining sound fiscal integrity. The Foundation’s key enterprises include Dining Services; the Bronco Bookstore; faculty and staff housing; student housing at University Village; Kellogg West Conference Center & Hotel; commercial real estate activities; and Innovation Village, a premier corporate research and technology park in the Southern California region. In addition, the Foundation administers grants and contracts, supports several university publications, and provides operating support for nearly 1,200 Foundation and scholarship programs.

As the largest employer of students on campus, the Foundation offers valuable work experience and hands on training to approximately 1,700 Cal Poly Pomona students each year. Student employees may take advantage of the university’s learn-by-doing philosophy and acquire practical skills in their designated area of students, such as technology, science, retail, culinary arts, or hospitality management. The ED will be a proven, effective leader with demonstrated capacity to provide efficient, entrepreneurial and innovative auxiliary services to the university community. The ED will identify opportunities for cost savings through shared service models and streamlining operations; lead staff in the development and implementation of short- and long-range plans; partner with campus executives to advance real estate development and public-private partnerships; promote the programs and services of the Foundation to the university and community partners; and support a staff culture that prides itself on quality service and continuous improvement.

The new ED will be a hands-on leader with strong business acumen and effective partnering skills coupled with excellent interpersonal, communication, and financial leadership skills. The ED will have a keen understanding of the trends and issues facing institutions of higher education and affiliated auxiliary organizations. The ED must be resourceful, organized, and results-oriented. The successful candidate will respect the university’s collaborative culture and be a confident, humble leader able to influence and motivate others in a fast-paced environment.
