Assistant Dean for Diversity and Cultural Initiatives

The College of Human Medicine (CHM) at Michigan State University (MSU) invites applications and nominations for the position of Assistant Dean for Diversity and Cultural Initiatives to provide programming, mentorship, and coordination of diversity and cultural initiatives for medical students and faculty engaged in the Shared Discovery Curriculum. The Assistant Dean will join a team in the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ODEI) to lead efforts to develop an intentional culture of inclusion and will help to envision a robust program of support for students from diverse backgrounds.

 

Michigan State University, the nation’s original land-grant university, provides a unique environment and wealth of resources including four health colleges (Human, Osteopathic, and Veterinary Medicine and Nursing) primarily located on the East Lansing campus. The College of Human Medicine is a community-based medical school with over 800 students training at campuses in seven communities across the state of Michigan (Flint, Grand Rapids, Lansing, Marquette, Midland, Traverse City, and Southeast Michigan). The first and second year medical students are trained exclusively in East Lansing and Grand Rapids.

 

The Assistant Dean for Diversity and Cultural Initiatives provides leadership, management, and planning to improve the learning climate and to support an intentional culture of inclusion for students, faculty, and staff in support of the College’s educational mission. The Assistant Dean will make contributions to health disparities education and research within his/her relevant clinical discipline. This position will be based in the Grand Rapids Campus and the Assistant Dean will have responsibilities that span the college system. The Assistant Dean for Diversity and Cultural Initiatives will report to the Senior Associate Dean for Diversity and Inclusion.

 

The successful candidate must have a medical degree (M.D. or D.O.), and a record of scholarship that supports appointment as a faculty member, as well as a demonstrated record of providing health care services to diverse and underserved populations. The Assistant Dean position will be a 75-80% appointment in the Dean’s Office and the remaining 20-25% will be flexible based on academic and/or clinical responsibilities of the candidate.
