University of California, San Francisco

San Francisco, California

The University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), one of the world’s premier institutions devoted to health sciences, seeks a dynamic, collaborative leader to serve as the Associate University Librarian for Research and Learning (AUL). Reporting to the University Librarian and Assistant Vice Chancellor for Academic Information Management (UL), the AUL will play a crucial role as a partner to the University Librarian in establishing the UCSF Library as a leader in open science and a pillar supporting an expansive culture of learning, using innovative organizing principles and technological tools to access and distribute knowledge that advances clinical care, education, and scientific discovery.

The UCSF Library is an integrated, multi-campus enterprise renowned for its contemporary approaches in cutting edge education, research, and clinical training, dedicated to community engagement and learning. With locations on the Parnassus, Mission Bay, and Zuckerberg San Francisco General (ZSFG) Hospital campuses, the UCSF Library is uniquely poised to foster connections among UCSF’s top-rated graduate programs and professional schools in Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, and the Graduate Division, as well as other biomedical libraries across Northern California and the entire UC system.

University libraries have experienced unparalleled change over the last two decades, and UCSF is no exception. The UCSF Library has been a highly influential leader in fostering the rise of digital information in place of printed materials, and it has embraced the explosion in the number and variety of traditional and non-traditional publishing venues, the growth of large multidimensional research datasets, and the emergence of learners who are digital natives. The next AUL will serve as the primary deputy to the UL, playing a prominent role across the Library’s functional areas including technology innovation and additional development and support of the Library’s makerspace, as well as engaging in high-level, university-wide discussions around data science, open science, and the role of the Library in curricular integration and research support. The AUL will oversee all recruiting functions for the new Director of Teaching and Learning Technology position, partnering with library leadership and leading a hiring committee to refine the position description and hire the most qualified candidate to fill the role. Together with the UL, the AUL will be integral in shepherding culture change within the Library and across UCSF to move the institution forward toward a renewed vision of information management, wherein the libraries take an active role in educating university constituencies about contemporary and future management strategies.

To advance the mission of the Library at UCSF, the ideal candidate will address the following key opportunities and challenges:

  • Further the synergy between the UCSF academic mission and the capabilities of the Library
  • Act as liaison and advocate for the Library services and space within the University
  • Improve organizational effectiveness and manage change
  • Represent the interests of the Library across the UC system and beyond
