The University of New Mexico

Search for the Vice President for Enrollment Management

Albuquerque, NM

The University of New Mexico (UNM), the state’s flagship institution, seeks a creative and strategic enrollment management leader to serve as the next Vice President for Enrollment Management (VPEM). Joining the team of President Garnett S. Stokes, who became President in March, 2018, and as of July 1 the new Provost and Executive Vice President, James Holloway, the VPEM will help lead this distinctive institution from a period of enrollment challenges and graduation rate successes to capitalize on a bold and ambitious vision. As UNM has one of the most diverse student bodies of any flagship university in the nation, and is one of only a handful of Hispanic-Serving Institutions in the U.S. that has a Carnegie Classification of Highest Research Activity (“R1”), it aspires to be a model for how a university can fulfill its missions of academic excellence, research, student success, and access given the changing demographics of the U.S. The successful candidate for this position will be an experienced and innovative enrollment management leader with proven accomplishment in growing enrollments, retaining a diverse student body and executing a vision to achieve institutional goals.

UNM provides an education to nearly 30,000 students, more than 80 percent of whom are New Mexico residents. The student population reflects the ethnically diverse population of New Mexico and includes historically underrepresented groups, including a very diverse Hispanic student population of over 40%, some of whom have deep roots going back many generations in the region while others are recent immigrants from a variety of nations in Latin America, about 7% Native American students from across the world as well as from 23 tribes that have ancestral homeland ties to NM including 19 Pueblos, Navajo Nation, Jicarilla Apache Nation, Mescalero Apache Tribe, and the Fort Still Apache Tribe, 3% Asian, 2% Black, 2% multi-racial, and 1% international. It is a point of pride that the University is composed of a cross-section of cultures and backgrounds. UNM also has a decades-long deep and abiding commitment to making education accessible and affordable for the state’s urban and rural residents, maintaining low tuition and providing significant scholarship and financial aid to about 80% of undergraduate students, and 70% of graduate students, with 37.5% of those receiving Pell Grants in 2017-2018.

UNM also plays a critical role in driving the State’s economy through education, research, healthcare, and engagement with the community. The Main Campus occupies nearly 800 acres near old Route 66 in the heart of Albuquerque, a metropolitan area of more than 500,000 people. The University also includes a Health Sciences Center, branch campuses in Gallup, Los Alamos, Taos, and Valencia, technology incubators, and multiple education centers throughout the state. The University serves as one of the state’s largest employers and the largest producer of skilled labor. The UNM Health Sciences Center is the only academic medical center in New Mexico and operates as one of the state’s largest health care systems. Additionally, in fiscal year 2018, UNM attracted $300 million dollars in contract and grant research funding to the State. The 2019 edition of the U.S. News & World Report ranks UNM as 187th among national universities and in the top 100 of public institutions in the nation.

UNM seeks a bold, creative, and forward-thinking VPEM who can work effectively with the President, Provost and Executive Vice President, Vice Presidents, Deans, other senior leaders, the University community, and the residents of the State of New Mexico to help achieve its vision and address the following key opportunities and challenges:

  • Devise and execute strategies to increase enrollment
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive strategic enrollment management plan
  • Partner across the University to promote and sustain student success initiatives
  • Enhance marketing and communication efforts to attract and retain a diverse student body
  • Maximize use of limited resources to meet enrollment goals
  • Better leverage technology and data analytics to improve student success
