Multicultural Academic Advisor and Native Retention Specialist
The University of Oregon’s Center for Multicultural Academic Excellence (CMAE) is seeking a committed academic advisor to help provide holistic and culturally competent advising for underrepresented and underserved students. The Multicultural Academic Advisor and Native Retention Specialist will provide academic advice, guidance and support to a diverse student population ranging from Diversity Excellence Scholars, underrepresented students, and specifically Native and Indigenous students. This position will work with students to develop individualized success plans, identify barriers to retention and degree completion, and coordinate wrap-around support, foster academic achievement, and provide guidance and support as students pursue their academic goals and attain their degrees. They will assist students in understanding academic processes and policies to allow students to make informed choices on majors, minors and time to degree. This position will work with an advising cohort to provide academic guidance and monitor academic plans. The Advisor helps identify barriers and solutions for students and provides case management for students who need additional support as they navigate their academic standing, or other campus challenges.
The Advisor also serves on campus committees and represents the office campus-wide regarding proactive outreach and intervention practices to increase Native student degree completion. The Retention Specialist will collaborate with the Many Nations Longhouse to foster integration and academic success for Native and Indigenous students. This position will work collaboratively to identify and document the network of campus and community services to meet the specific needs of Native and Indigenous students. Help develop mutually beneficial relationship and opportunities for collaboration with other advising programs, departmental partners, and faculty to better serve Native students. They will also serve as a resource for other advisors in their work with underrepresented and Native students, advancing campus-wide advisor competency and expertise in serving all students. The Advisor will collaborate with other CMAE staff and campus partners to facilitate retention programs and functions for underrepresented and underserved students including but not limited to ethnic minorities, first-generation, STEM initiatives and academic residential communities.

DEI promotes inclusive excellence by working to ensure equitable access to opportunities, benefits, and resources through engagement with the campus and the community. As a part of our efforts, we design and implement campus-wide programs to recruit and retain a diverse community of student, staff, and community partners.
The CMAE, a unit within the DEI, is a place where students are empowered, engaged and nurtured for success. CMAE’s mission is to promote student retention and persistence for historically underrepresented and underserved populations. CMAE is comprised of professional advisors and staff who provide culturally competent, holistic and student centered advising, coaching, mentoring and support. CMAE staff assist students in making a smooth transition to the UO by serving as campus and community connectors, and institutional translators thereby allowing students to take full advantage of educational, professional and social opportunities on campus. CMAE advisors work with undergraduate and graduate students in a variety of academic stages from exploring majors, transfer, first-generation, cultural integration, Dreamer and tuition equity, and issues of financial and academic concerns or distress. In addition, CMAE advisors work collaboratively with campus partners on workshops, outreach activities, participate in orientation events, and advise students in cultural academic residential communities.
- A Bachelor’s degree
- At least 2 years of professional work experience in advising, counseling, mentoring, or related work environment that included one-on-one interaction with others to accurately and effectively convey information and/or provide guidance.
