Assistant Director, Residential Education


To provide leadership for departmental programs and projects, manage residential communities of 300-600 undergraduate residents, and design, implement, manage, and encourage community development and educational programs that facilitate integrative learning and foster student academic, social, and emotional growth. Also, to provide guidance, counsel, adjudication, and leadership to encourage students to take responsibility for their actions and to manage positive communities that foster acceptance, tolerance, and consideration for the rights and freedoms of others. This is a 12-month live-in position.

Key Accountabilities

House and Program Administration – 30%

  • Oversees day-to-day administration of an undergraduate residential community housing 300-600 students through the management of all programs and initiatives, community events, staff, student concerns, facilities, administration, and relevant services.
  • Provides counsel, advising, mediation, referral, and resources for resident students regarding personal and academic matters.
  • Establishes community programming goals and directs, coordinates, supports, and evaluates student staff programming efforts.
  • Attends meetings, programs and responds to emergencies in all physical spaces and primarily within assigned residential area(s). 
  • Collaborates with House Professors, Living Learning advisors and other faculty to implement the residential house model and living learning programs.
  • Facilitates the development of a shared sense of identity and community in assigned residential area; collaborates with other stakeholders to establish a defined, common experience, including the establishment of traditions, symbols, and other methods of creating a sense of identity.
  • Coordinates the residential leadership team in area of responsibility, including meeting regularly with the house professor, graduate students, program advisors, student leaders, and other key stakeholders to support the house program and other residential programs. Advises student leadership groups in assigned residential community.
  • Develops and fosters the involvement of first-year students and other house members who are not residing in their house.
  • Collaborates with academic centers and departments to facilitate academic engagement and coordinate programming/involvement in the residential communities.

Housing and Operations – 5%

  • Manages and implements opening and closing processes for assigned buildings each term in partnership with Residential Operations and the Housing Office.
  • Collaborates with Residential Operations staff (including building custodians) to maintain residential facilities. Reports and investigates damage, vandalism, and facilities problems.
  • Participates in the housing assignment process, collaborates with Housing Office staff to maintain up-to-date housing assignment information, and assists with the resolution of issues and problems associated with room assignments and roommate conflicts.
  • Collaborates with other departments and offices to ensure that the facilities and space reservation processes support the programmatic needs of the assigned residential area.

Case Management and Judicial – 10%

  • Participates in the campus-wide case management system and submits reports through Maxient database and reporting system. Participates in situational case management meetings as needed.
  • Serves as a college hearing officer. Works in conjunction with the Undergraduate Judicial Affairs Office and utilizes the Maxient software system to administer the hearing process. Coordinates the education of residents regarding college standards and policies,
  • Responds to and follows up on crises, emergencies, and concerning student behavior at the hall/community level. Trains and oversees student staff in their use of the Maxient reporting system. Independently and in conjunction with student staff, conducts outreach activities to resident students.

Supervision – 30%

  • Trains, supervises, and evaluates 9-15 undergraduate student staff. 
  • Co-supervises graduate students, working in collaboration with other stakeholders such as House Professors and Living Learning program advisors to facilitate involvement of graduate staff in the residential program.
  • Collaborates with Residential Education staff to select, place, and train approximately 150 students each year. Participates in and coordinates the selection of staff members who will work in assigned residential area, including graduate student staff members and student staff assigned to house communities; collaborates with other stakeholders to select and assign student staff for houses, FYRE communities, and LLC programs.
  • Implements a continuing education program for student staff and provides professional development opportunities to undergraduate staff.
  • May share supervision of House administrative staff.

Budget and Administration – 5%

  • Maintains residential community budget and office, adhering to College purchasing procedures and other policies.

Other – 20%

  • Manages specific departmental programs and initiatives as assigned and possibly chairs relevant committees, such as the following: UGA Selection; UGA Training; First-Year Residential Experience Program; Living-Learning and Affinity Programs; House Programs; End-of-Year Celebration; Continuing Education.
  • Completes departmental projects as assigned.
  • Serves as a visible and active representative of Residential Life within the residential and campus community.
  • Attends Dartmouth professional training programs and participates in appropriate professional organizations, conferences, and research activities to remain current in the field. Actively pursues opportunities to establish and maintain professional network and formally present information to colleagues.
  • Supports and coordinates student involvement in institutional events, such as New Student Orientation, Commencement, Homecoming, Dimensions, Winter Carnival, and similar events.
  • May provide stewardship for programs of alumni support for residential communities.
  • Serves as appropriate or appointed on departmental, divisional, and institutional committees.
  • Serves in the campus-wide Assistant Director on call rotation and responds to student crises and critical issues as needed.
  • Communicates respectfully with a diverse community and promotes and strengthens inclusivity and diversity awareness in the residence halls.

  • Solid foundation in student development theory and student learning theory, and their application to professional practice in an evolving residential setting.

  • Supervisory and leadership ability.
  • Excellent communication, collaboration, listening and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to foster positive and productive relationships with all campus constituencies, including institutional leaders, faculty, staff, students, and parents and families 
  • Demonstrated cultural competence; proven effectiveness in serving the needs of a diverse undergraduate student population 
  • Ability to balance competing demands under pressure.


  • Bachelor’s degree required. 
  • Two years of residential life experience, with at least one year of residential life experience at the graduate level or above. 
  • Experience supervising student staff.
  • Familiarity with budget administration. 
  • Ability to adapt personal and professional schedule to the College’s year-round calendar.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with computer systems and applications, including StarRez,Maxient, and OrgSync. 
  • Experience working with living learning programs.
  • Master’s degree in student personnel, education, counseling, or related field or the equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.
