President

On February 25, 2019, President Philip A. Glotzbach announced his retirement from Skidmore College, effective June 30, 2020, marking a successful 17-year tenure. Thus, Skidmore College is inviting nominations and applications for the position of president, with a preferred start date of July 1, 2020.

Creative Thought Matters in every way at Skidmore. The College’s curriculum balances a commitment to the liberal arts with an emphasis on interdisciplinarity along with preparation for professions, civic leadership, and lifetime learning. A highly selective, nationally-ranked liberal arts college, Skidmore currently enrolls approximately 2,500 students in roughly 40 degree programs, including programs in both traditional liberal arts and pre-professional disciplines, such as the popular management and business program. With a student/faculty ratio of 8:1, Skidmore emphasizes a highly personalized learning environment, and the curriculum encourages broad and multi-pronged approaches to learning, from the traditional classroom setting to engagement with unique on-campus resources such as the Tang Teaching Museum. The College’s principal mission is the education of full-time coeducational undergraduates, 24 percent of whom are domestic students of color and 13 percent of whom are international students representing 46 different countries.

Skidmore’s next president will be a passionate and innovative visionary who will articulate and advocate for the importance of a liberal arts education in today’s competitive and rapidly evolving world. The incoming president will be a strong community-builder with a proven commitment to access, along with ample fundraising and administrative experience. Following the anticipated successful close of the $200 million Creating Our Future campaign, the next president will address new challenges involving integrative learning, increased access, enhancing athletic facilities and programs, strengthening community, and investing in sustainability to ensure that Skidmore remains a leader in providing the experiences and education necessary for today’s graduates to thrive both professionally and personally. The ideal candidate will be passionate about blending the traditional approach to education with broader educational and social issues, the arts, hands-on learning experiences, and pre-professional studies. Skidmore’s 8th president will be an effective and engaging communicator who manages change by incorporating input from a wide variety of constituencies – an exemplar of the College’s commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and shared governance. The president reports to the board of trustees, manages an approximately $170 million budget, and oversees an endowment of over $375 million.

Located in Saratoga Springs, NY, just a half-hour drive from the tri-city area of Albany, Schenectady, and Troy, and a three-hour drive from New York City, Boston, and Montreal, Skidmore’s campus blends idyllic natural beauty with modern and sustainable building investment, including the much-anticipated Center for Integrated Sciences, which is currently under construction. The College itself and the Saratoga community offer unparalleled access to the performing and visual arts. Adjacent to the Adirondack Mountains, the area is home to a thriving technology sector and myriad cultural and historical attractions, including the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, ten museums, numerous spas, and the famed Saratoga Race Course for thoroughbred horse racing.
