Vice President for Enrollment Management and Student Success

Cleveland State University (CSU), an urban public research institution committed to student success, invites applications and nominations for a forward-thinking and transformative leader to serve as the inaugural vice president for enrollment management and student success (VPEMSS).

Founded in 1964, CSU is a dynamic institution with over 17,000 students, 10 colleges and schools offering more than 175 academic programs. The Brookings Institution ranks CSU No. 18 in the United States among public universities that fulfill a critical dual mission: providing upward mobility and conducting impactful research. Under the visionary leadership of President Harlan Sands, the University has tremendous momentum and potential. For the 2018-2019 academic year, CSU welcomed the largest freshman class in its history, with 1,950 first-year students. CSU is deeply connected to its community, and these ties have been further strengthened through a series of forward-thinking initiatives including the new Parker Hannifin Living Learning Community for Say Yes to Education, a partnership with Shorelight to recruit international students, and Degree Link and UPExpress, CSU programs with local community colleges.

As the first leader of this new division, the VPEMSS will assume a significant and influential position at the University and have the opportunity to make a tangible contribution to the future of CSU. This impactful position combines the enrollment management division (recruitment and admissions, registrar, treasury services, financial aid, one-stop and processing) with student success support programs (first year advising, exploratory advising, first year experience, TRIO, Graduation Coaching Office and the Transfer Center). This is an opportunity to play a lead role in developing a new enrollment management model and to influence broad campus policy and operations regarding student recruitment and retention. The new leader will be empowered to build on the considerable institutional support for and interest in enrollment and student success to recruit, attract, select, enroll, retain, educate, develop and graduate a talented and diverse group of students. It is expected that the VPEMSS will formulate, execute and continuously assess a seamless and forward-looking student support experience from first point of contact to graduation that stems from and extends the mission, goals and aspirations of Cleveland State University.

The successful candidate will provide vision, leadership and expertise to all areas of enrollment and student success at CSU. A passion for building and comfort with change are essential, as is great analytic and technological depth, the ability to improve upon every metric in the enrollment spectrum, a commitment to keeping student welfare always at the forefront, and a proven capacity for embedding enrollment and student success priorities within institutional values and aspirations. The VPEMSS will also be a strong collaborator with superior interpersonal communication skills and will possess the professional currency to garner the trust and confidence of senior leaders, deans, faculty, campus constituents and division staff.

Inquiries, nominations and applications are invited. Candidates should provide, as two separate documents, a resume and a letter of application that addresses the responsibilities and requirements described in the Leadership Profile, available www.wittkieffer.com. These materials should be sent via e-mail to Cleveland State University’s consultants, Amy Crutchfield and Christine Pendleton, at CSU-EMSS@wittkieffer.com. The consultants can be reached through the desk of Paula Verace at pverace@wittkieffer.com.
