Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream - CLTA Computer Science
The Department of Computer and Mathematical Sciences at the University of Toronto Scarborough invites applications for a three-year contractually limited term appointment (CLTA) in the field of Computer Science. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream and will commence on July 1, 2019, or shortly thereafter and ending on June 30, 2022.
Candidates must hold a graduate degree in Computer Science or a closely related field by the time of the appointment. Candidates with a PhD in Computer Science are preferred. We seek candidates who have experience in teaching at the university level including lecture preparation and delivery, curriculum development, and development of online material/lectures, and experience with the use of innovative pedagogical methods. We seek candidates whose teaching interests complement and strengthen our existing departmental strengths. Candidates must demonstrate a record of excellence in teaching and pedagogical practice, strong communication and interpersonal skills, and a commitment to students’ learning. Evidence of these can be demonstrated through teaching awards/accolades, a coherent statement of teaching philosophy that is linked to evidence of excellent pedagogical practices, strong endorsements from referees of high standing, teaching accomplishments highlighted as part of the application, teaching evaluations, and syllabi and selected course materials, as well as the teaching dossier submitted as part of the application. A strong background in software engineering and/or computer systems is preferred.
Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
The successful candidate will join a vibrant group of teaching-stream faculty who are engaged in pedagogical and curricular innovations and research. Faculty are expected to combine their expertise in the discipline with best practices in teaching to create rich learning environments that embrace diversity, promote equity, and integrate research in a manner that challenges students to develop skills and ethics to be leading citizens.
The appointment is at the University of Toronto Scarborough, which is a research-intensive institution with an interdisciplinary commitment and a multicultural student body. Duties include teaching undergraduate courses, managing teaching assistants, developing course materials, curriculum development, running course related software, and working closely with the Department of Computer Science in the Faculty of Arts and Science and the University of Toronto at Mississauga to ensure year-to-year consistency in course content. Candidates may be required to teach some or all courses in the evenings if deemed necessary by the department. In addition to teaching, the successful candidate will be expected to perform standard professional and administrative activities typical of an academic department, and to collaborate with colleagues on program development.
