Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs

Wesleyan University

Middletown, Connecticut

Reporting directly to the President, the Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs (The Provost) is the chief academic officer and a key member of the senior leadership team, playing a pivotal role in setting and achieving Wesleyan’s academic, strategic, and institutional goals. The Provost will be committed to energizing Wesleyan’s distinctive educational experience while bringing a fresh perspective and vision that will help the University achieve its objectives.

Since its founding in 1831, Wesleyan has been a national leader in curricular innovation. The University is consistently ranked among the nation’s top liberal arts colleges and offers an intimate and collaborative learning environment with renowned faculty, cutting-edge facilities, and unique research opportunities. Housed on a beautiful 315-acre historic New England campus, the University is known for its vibrant campus culture that promotes and nurtures critical thinking and practical idealism. With approximately 3,000 full-time undergraduates, Wesleyan is primarily an undergraduate institution; it also enrolls around 200 graduate students and offers a master of arts in liberal studies, master of philosophy in liberal arts, and PhDs in six disciplines.

The dynamism of Wesleyan students and alumni is a direct result of the University’s historic and continuing commitment to enrolling those seeking  an intellectually challenging, civically engaged, and inclusive campus community.

The Provost oversees the University curriculum and new curricular initiatives; faculty hiring and promotion; support for faculty research and teaching; administration of all academic departments; the library (one of the finest small academic libraries in the United States); athletics; global studies; the Divisional Deans; the registrar's office; and Institutional Research. This leader will represent the core academic mission at Board meetings; lead internal discussions on academic planning, curriculum development, faculty governance, and issues related to teaching, scholarship, and faculty development; and facilitate fundraising efforts. In conjunction with the Vice President for Student Life, the Provost leads the University’s efforts at promoting on-campus learning, but will also work with a variety of constituents to bolster educational activities beyond campus. The successful candidate will be an outstanding teacher and scholar who is student-centered and holds a deep belief in the importance of a liberal arts education.
