Assistant Specialist

The University of California (UC), Davis, School of Medicine, department of Medical Microbiology and Immunology seeks to hire a full-time employee as an Assistant Specialist.

This position requires creative contributions to and collaborative development of an active research program investigating topics relevant to different research areas. The position performs research, data analysis, preparation of data for publication, supervision and training of laboratory personnel and general laboratory management.

Basic Requirements: Master's degree in biology, microbiology, or related field. Highly advanced experimental and data analysis skills, and experience in immunohitochemistry,in situ hybridization, ELISA, protein extraction, DNA/RNA extractions and PCR. Experience in lab management and organization, inventory management and ordering. Experience with safety protocols and equipment employed in microbiology laboratories. Sufficient knowledge of infectious disease to communicate the laboratory's research projects to others in laboratory.

Preferred Requirements: Experience with and knowledge of biological safety and recombinant DNA documentation required by UC Davis and NIH.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, providing support and assistance with experimental design, data analysis, and assay completion to other researchers. staff. Perform lab safety officer duties including overseeing and student and staff member safety training requirements, preparing for safety inspections, and enforcing safety standards. Order lab supplies, maintain and organize supply inventory. Maintain laboratory equipment. Train and supervise undergraduate; assign and oversee student activities. Optimize and write SOPs and protocols for laboratory techniques. Process blood samples and organize sample biorepository. Perform in vitro experiments with primary human and animal samples and cell lines. Cell culture, including cell lines and primary patient samples. Cell-based assays, including cell surface staining, intracellular staining. Human tissue and peripheral blood processing, ELISA, gel electrophoresis, protein extractions, SDS-PAGE and western blotting. Assist in writing proposals for funding to funding organizations. Will be required to participate in professional competence and activity, as well as University and public service. When appropriate, the candidate may coordinate and/or give presentations at laboratory meetings that include presenting research results.
