ASSISTANT DIRECTOR FOR TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER (#4156)

Northern Illinois University (NIU), a student-centered, research-focused public institution located in DeKalb, Illinois, seeks applications for Assistant Director for Technology Transfer (ADTT).  The ADTT holds a professional position and has responsibility for managing intellectual property generated at NIU and associated commercialization agreements. The ADTT provides supportive services to faculty, staff and students for university owned intellectual property and associated commercialization agreements. The ADTT also liaises with external stakeholders including governmental entities, industry, and the public on matters of intellectual property and commercialization agreements.  The ADTT reports directly to the Director of the Office of Innovation and will assist the Director requiring only general direction and supervision.

Summary of Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The following describes the general nature and level of work, other duties may be assigned:

Intellectual property (IP) review, assessment, and prosecution management

  • Manage and administer the assessment of innovations and provide the Director recommendations for pursuit of legal protections and advise on other protections available.
  • Maintain and administer the NIU IP Policy, establishing operational guidelines and administrative procedures for University-owned IP; including education of the campus community about the intellectual property policy.
  • Liaise with patent law firms to prepare and file protection applications, provide filing and patent prosecution materials for selected innovations or assist in IP related agreements.
  • Coordinate IP management and assignments with third parties, such as the Northern Illinois Research Foundation.
  • Maintain current knowledge of issues related to IP, legislation, and technology transfer.
  • Provide the Director with IP budget forecasts.

 

Commercialization agreement development and management

  • Cultivate and develop commercialization opportunities for university IP through the use of agreements.
  • Prepare, negotiate, and execute licenses and other IP related agreements, such as those involving confidentiality and outgoing material transfer or involving co-ownership of innovations with external parties.
  • Provide continuous management of existing IP agreements for performance and compliance.

 

Database and compliance management

  • Oversee the content of the Technology Transfer website and University IP marketing materials.
  • Manage and maintain file and database records for innovations, ownership, reporting, prosecution communications, protections, maintenance and IP use agreements.
  • Ensure federal, state and other sponsored research agreements IP reporting are met.

 

University and Community outreach

  • Promote the mission and business of the office through the development of strong relationships with innovators (mainly faculty members), legal counsel, prospective and actual licensees, and colleagues.

 

Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in business, science, or engineering and a minimum two years’ experience commercializing new technologies for universities or industry is required.

An advanced degree in one of the fields listed above, with five or more years’ experience commercializing new technologies for universities and industry is preferred. 

 

The candidate must be a legal permanent resident or U.S. citizen.
