Advising Case Manager

Position Summary
The Office of Academic Advising (OAA) Advisor/Case Manager is an experienced, professional advisor who specializes in working with high-concern and at-risk student situations, along with providing general academic advising services to the UO student population. This position will work with students to develop individualized success plans and coordinate wrap-around support, identify problems and solutions in the arena of at-risk students, and use sound judgment and reasoning to make crucial decisions autonomously. This position will also provide case management for students who need additional support as they go through the academic petition process.

In addition, OAA Advisors/Case Managers work with departmental partners across campus to promote the mission of the University of Oregon, foster academic achievement, and provide guidance and support as students make thoughtful educational choices. They serve as a resource for other advisors and OAA staff in their work with students in crisis, advancing advisor competency and expertise in serving students with varying needs and connecting them to campus resources. This position will identify and document the network of campus and community services to meet specific needs related to academic distress, legal issues, mental health services, and financial concerns.

This position will also work with colleagues across campus to coordinate, present, design, and implement advising activities, workshops, and programs relevant to their area of expertise in serving at-risk student populations and thus increasing student success and retention.
OAA Advisors/Case Managers will be responsible to serve on committees and represent the office across campus, interfacing with a variety of campus partners including members of the Students of Concern Committee, Counseling and Testing Services, Residential Life, Center for Conduct and Community Care, Financial Aid, Oregon Police Department (OPD), Legal Counsel, and other administrators. Together with these partners, Advisors/Case Managers will address (and/or refer out to experts) the needs of students who are having trouble in areas such as academics, psychological well-being, economic stress, behavioral concerns, family relationships, and social adjustment.

Advisors/Case Managers must be culturally competent and able to work with first-generation, low income, underrepresented, international, and transfer students. They must be skilled in addressing the needs of re-entry students, students in crisis, and students experiencing scholastic difficulty. Advisors/Case Managers must also demonstrate respect for all individuals, welcome diversity among students and colleagues, and actively work toward an inclusive workplace.

Minimum Requirements
• Bachelor’s degree.
• One year of experience working in health care services, crisis management/prevention, or social service organizations that provide case management and service referral for clients/patients.
• Two years’ experience providing advising or counseling in education, counseling, social work/behavioral support, or college/university environment.

• Acute attention to detail, as is required by the nature of this work due to the liability and consequences associated with error.
• Demonstrated comprehensive expertise in student development and advising, as well as counseling, social work, and/or crisis management.
• Ability to effectively present, convey, and tailor information related to the expertise of this position to different audiences such as students, staff, faculty, and parents.

Preferred Qualifications
• A master’s degree in social work, counseling, marriage and family therapy, student services/student affairs, higher education leadership or related area.
• Three years of experience working with students/individuals in crisis and creating support plans, interventions, and/or providing case management.
• Three or more years experience providing advising or counseling in education, counseling, social work/behavioral support, or college/university environment.
• Knowledge of University and/or community resources to assist individuals in meeting mental/physical health, financial, academic, and other basic needs.
