Associate Vice President for Innovation and Economic Development
- University of Texas at San Antonio
- San Antonio, TX
The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) seeks an experienced and accomplished leader as their new Associate Vice President (AVP) for Innovation and Economic Development.
UTSA is a multicultural discovery enterprise institution with more than 32,000 students that was founded in 1969. It is the largest university in San Antonio metropolitan region with specializations in health, energy sustainability, cybersecurity, and human and social development. As a public Hispanic and urban-serving university, UTSA is highly focused on student success, meeting the educational needs of first-generation (approximately 45 percent of UTSA undergraduates), transfers, DACA, Dreamers, Veterans, and international students.
Since 1979, UTSA’s economic development programs have been building the economy, one business at a time. UTSA’s Institute for Economic Development currently hosts a variety of centers and programs that facilitate economic, community, and business development at the local, regional, and national levels. Programs serve a range of entrepreneurs, from those who are just starting a business to experienced business owners looking for new markets to communities seeking to improve their economic health. Within UTSA’s institutional structure, the operation is part of the Office of the Vice President for Research, Economic Development, and Knowledge Enterprise.
The new AVP for Innovation and Economic Development will be asked to address the following critical leadership issues. The AVP will provide continuity of leadership and build on strengths of existing programs. This person will also integrate new components into their portfolio as well as incorporate this area into the newly configured Office of the Vice President for Research, Economic Development, and Knowledge Enterprise. The AVP will inherit a strong foundation of programs built over the past 35 years, but look for opportunities to expand the reach of programs and to building new relationships with stakeholders. Additionally, this person will be astute at developing new funding sources, both from the public and the private sectors.
In order to achieve this ambitious set of agenda items, UTSA seeks a visionary leader with impressive experience to lead its innovation and economic development activities into the future. The new AVP will have an ability first to engage the community in crafting a compelling vision that builds on completed work, and then to create an environment that enables the UTSA to achieve that vision. This person will have a collaborative and relationship-based leadership style as well as experience bringing people together to solve challenges and empower others. The AVP will have unparalleled leadership and management skills as well as exceptional emotional intelligence. In addition to exceptional verbal and written skills in English, there is a strong preference for Spanish language skills. This person will have a minimum of ten years of experience in technology development, technology transfer, commercialization, entrepreneurship, and/or small business/economic development with at least five years as a program director responsible for grants and program management. A Master’s Degree from an accredited institution in Business Administration, Sciences, Engineering or Public Administration is required. A Ph.D. in related field is preferred.
