The University of California, Irvine (UCI) seeks a collaborative and strategic scholar-administrator and leader in graduate education to serve as Vice Provost and Dean of the Graduate Division. UCI is among the nation’s top public research universities and a member of the world-renowned University of California system. As part of UCI’s strategic plan, “Bright Past, Brilliant Future,” the University has a goal of reaching a population of 25% graduate students, with a focus on increasing the number of quality Ph.D. students in particular. The Vice Provost and Graduate Dean will play a vital role in advancing this strategic pillar, helping to secure the institution’s standing as an innovative and world-class research university committed to inclusive excellence.
Located five miles from the ocean, UCI is a world-class minority-serving institution, Hispanic-serving institution, and Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-serving institution. UCI serves approximately 30,000 undergraduate students, 5,700 graduate students on the general campus, and 1,400 graduate students at the Health Sciences campus. There are more than 1,300 faculty and approximately 11,000 total staff members. Founded as an interdisciplinary campus, it boasts excellence across its sciences, engineering, arts, and humanities core and in its professional schools. UCI is ranked first among all universities in the The New York Times list of “Top Colleges Doing the Most for the American Dream.” In U.S. News & World Report’s 2019 “Best Colleges” survey, UCI climbed to seventh among all public universities and 33rd out of the 1,600 universities evaluated nationwide. UCI was in Sierra Club’s top 10 “Cool School” list of campuses. As the youngest member of the prestigious Association of American Universities (AAU), UCI combines the strengths of a major research institution with the dynamism and agility of an emergent campus. In addition, its mission as a public and land grant institution plays a significant role in contributing to the advancement of local, state, national and global communities.
There are more than 100 graduate academic and professional degree programs housed within 13 different academic units. Faculty scholarly productivity is exceptionally high: 44 of the 64 doctoral programs are ranked in the top 25th percentile by Academic Analytics. UCI’s graduate programs shine in national report rankings of graduate programs. Seven fields of advanced study place in the top 10 among public universities on U.S. News & World Report’s annual graduate school ranking list. In 2017-18, 1,472 Master’s, 389 Ph.D./Ed.D., 95 M.D., 48 M.F.A.’s, and 113 J.D.’s were awarded. Most Ph.D. programs at UCI offer students a five year funding guarantee. In recent years, UCI has attracted significant gifts to name its nursing school, its College of Health Sciences and, in less than ten years, UCI built a law school ranked in the top 25 in the nation.
The Vice Provost and Graduate Dean is the senior academic official responsible for graduate education at UCI. This individual will collaborate closely with the provost, Vice Chancellor for Research, deans and associate deans, department chairs, directors of interdisciplinary graduate programs, Graduate Council, Associated Graduate Students, and other academic leaders across campus and the UC system to manage graduate funding and ensure standards of excellence, fairness, and equity across all graduate programs. The University is focused on expanding graduate opportunities and diversity, to reflect the diversity present in the national undergraduate population. The Vice Provost and Graduate Dean will be responsible for both graduate education and postdoctoral scholar professional development, with a forward-looking vision of the future of graduate education to meet 21st century Ph.D. careers.
The ideal candidate will be an accomplished scholar with demonstrated expertise in administering graduate education programs, as well as experience with a wide range of scholarly disciplines and a strong commitment to the principles of shared governance. Primary qualifications for the position include a strong commitment to inclusive excellence, research, teaching, university and public service; leadership in fostering academic excellence in a research university; a distinguished record of scholarly achievement and success in extramural grants for graduate education/training; general knowledge of the wide range of disciplines, interests, and constituencies at UCI; and a strong and demonstrated record of commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
UCI offers single family on-campus faculty homes at below market rates and has six childcare centers (infants through afterschool care) located on campus. Irvine has excellent public K-12 schools.
