The Center for Vaccine Development and Global Health (CVD) in the University of Maryland, School of Medicine (UMSOM) seeks a Chief Business Officer. The Chief Business Officer will serve as the Center’s chief financial and chief business officer. CVD brings together more than four decades of internationally acclaimed, innovative, and lifesaving research on vaccines and infectious diseases.

As a comprehensive research center within the University of Maryland, School of Medicine CVD comprises a multi-disciplinary team of 25 full time primary faculty and 75 staff whose primary mission is to develop, evaluate, and implement vaccines and other interventions to reduce illness and mortality domestically and in less developed countries. CVD works to prevent and treat enteric and respiratory diseases, to reduce the threat of malaria and antimicrobial resistance, and to identify, understand and combat other tropic and emerging pathogens in impoverished settings. Training is a critical component of the Center’s work, as is CVD’s commitment to providing the foundation for the next generation of vaccinologists and global health scientists and researchers committed to CVD’s mission.

Reporting to the Director of CVD, Dr. Kathleen Neuzil, MD, MPH, FIDSA, one of the world’s most influential research scientists and advocates in vaccine development and policy, the Chief Business Officer will oversee operations, strategy, financial planning, budget, research administration, human resources, information technology, and space planning for the Center. The Chief Business Officer will collaborate with the leadership of the University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) as well as relevant departments and divisions, University of Maryland Medical Center (UMMC) and international partners and sponsors. The new Chief Business Officer is an essential member of the director’s leadership team and a partner to CVD faculty, providing seamless support for all of their activities.

The successful candidate will bring a record of success in guiding organizations through periods of growth and change. This individual will demonstrate strategic and administrative experience, preferably in the complex environments of academic medicine and/or industry scientific research and development. The Chief Business Officer’s expertise will include operations, strategic financial planning and team building. CVD seeks an individual drawn to problem solving, collaboration, and transparency, and who is motivated by a deep respect for the mission to improve human health throughout the world and educate the next generation of scientists.

The Chief Business Officer will be a forward-thinking, strategic, and flexible leader who can deal with today’s rapidly changing research, and financial environments. The ideal candidate will be able to formulate long-range financial projections and plans, and be able to modify them to address changes in a dynamic environment. Active participation in the Center’s efforts to strengthen business processes will be an area of early emphasis. This individual will build a cohesive administrative team that works collaboratively to achieve CVD goals. Candidates should present strong interpersonal skills, outstanding verbal and written communication skills, and a collegial personality.
