Professor of the Practice or Lecturer
The Engineering and Computing Education Program in the College of Engineering and Information Technology (COEIT) at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC) invites applications for a non-tenure track, full-time teaching position at the rank of Lecturer or Professor of the Practice beginning Fall 2019. Minimum qualifications include Master’s degree in an engineering discipline or Engineering Education and prior college-level teaching experience. Candidates with a PhD degree will be preferred. Preference will be given to candidates that have demonstrated excellence in teaching first-year engineering courses and an ongoing commitment to advancing engineering and computing education, as demonstrated through innovative teaching and pedagogical practices and published research. Industry experience will be considered advantageous.
A key component of this position is the development of an inclusive first-year experience for COEIT students. It is expected that the selected candidate will initially teach the Introduction to Engineering course, with the intention of transforming this course into a first-year experience for COEIT students. The candidate will be expected to effectively collaborate with faculty within the College and University to enhance current first-year course offerings by incorporating social and ethical aspects of the engineering and computing professions.
Expectations will be a combination of teaching, professional development and research. The anticipated teaching load is 2 or 3 course/sections per semester but teaching expectations may vary based on the expertise and interest of the candidate.
The selected candidate will be part of the new Engineering and Computing Education Program (ECEP) within the College of Engineering and Information Technology. The goals of ECEP are to:
- advance the engineering and computing professions by establishing multidisciplinary pathways for elevating student success and educating the next generation of socially and ethically conscious scientists and engineers.
- develop and deliver innovative, multidisciplinary engineering and computing courses and programs.
- model and advocate for scholarly, evidence-based teaching within our college.
- integrate pedagogical discovery, practice, and dissemination through leading-edge engineering and computing education research.
- serve as an incubator for new ideas and programs that shape the future of engineering and computing education.
- support COEIT engagement and outreach activities related to engineering and computing education.
