Vice President for Institutional Equity/Chief Diversity Officer

Duke University seeks applications and nominations for a new Vice President for Institutional Equity/Chief Diversity Officer (VP-OIE).

Younger than most other prestigious U.S. research universities, Duke consistently ranks among the very best, finding great strength in its rich diversity. The VP-OIE joins a senior leadership team that has embraced its responsibility to work together to foster collaboration, innovation, creativity and belonging. The VP-OIE is a direct report to the President with secondary reporting lines to the Executive Vice Chancellor, Provost, and Chancellor for Health Affairs. This leader will create connections and forge partnerships within an environment that is agile and open to changes in order to craft a community that encompasses people of many faiths, backgrounds, races, sexual orientations, and creeds who come together to live with, learn from, and support each other.

The Vice President for Institutional Equity is the university's chief officer, and provides institutional leadership for increasing diversity within Duke's communities and fostering equal opportunity for all employees, faculty, and students. The VP-OIE oversees the Office for Institutional Equity, a team of specialized professionals dedicated to upholding of values of equity and diversity and supporting compliance efforts in the areas of equal opportunity, affirmative action, and harassment prevention for the Duke University and Duke University Health System communities. Additionally, the VP-OIE will be instrumental in helping the university craft policies and procedures, and inspiring others to address underlying forces that conflict with the university's goal of empowering people, transforming education, and building community.

The successful candidate will be someone who can leverage a broad understanding of diversity and equity to identify emerging issues and spark critical and collaborative thinking around how to advance Duke's efforts in those areas. The VP-OIE will be able to navigate a complex university that includes a large health system, and demonstrates real sensitivity to multiple points of view and workplace cultures that are very different from one another. The VP-OIE will be metric-driven, and will harness the power of data to motivate people to reach goals and holds the institution accountable for progress. The position requires a person who can think like a lawyer, valuing the importance of process, and being able to design and implement procedures for responding to complaints from university constituents and inquiries from the Office of Civil Rights.
