Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion

Whitman College invites nominations and applications for the position of vice president for diversity and inclusion.

Founded in 1882, Whitman College is a highly selective, private, independent, co-educational, residential liberal arts college. Home to approximately 1,500 undergraduates from 45 states and 37 countries, the college fosters intellectual vitality, confidence and leadership, along with the flexibility to succeed in a changing, technological, multicultural world.

Whitman is located in Walla Walla, Washington, which was recently named one of the 10 best small towns in America and one of the world’s 10 best wine travel destinations. The town of nearly 32,000 residents boasts a thriving Latino/Hispanic community, representing over 20 percent of the county population.

The vice president for diversity and inclusion will join a dynamic and supportive campus community, providing leadership in advancing and ensuring inclusion and diversity in all its forms. Serving as a member of the President’s Cabinet, the vice president reports directly to the president and will play a critical role in the implementation of the college’s new strategic plan. The vice president will work closely with a dedicated faculty, staff and student body to enhance an inclusive Whitman community.

The vice president will advocate for diverse members of the Whitman community while promoting equity for all campus constituents; partner with offices across campus in an effort to recruit and retain a diverse student, faculty and staff population; oversee the Intercultural Center; oversee diversity-related programming; and engage with the broader Walla Walla community on issues relating to diversity.

The preferred candidate will possess a terminal degree; experience in supervision, program development and student organization advising; and knowledge of the best practices in promoting diversity in higher education. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, experience with budgeting, and strong interpersonal skills are essential. The preferred candidate will have experience serving on or leading a campus wide diversity committee.  An ability to listen, synthesize information, build relationships with a wide range of people, and influence key stakeholders is essential. A personal commitment to collaboration and integrity are highly desirable. The vice president should be cognizant of the mission of a selective liberal arts college and the importance of diversity as part of the overall educational mission.
