Assistant Professor in Aquatic Microbiology

<p>The Center for Great Lakes and Watershed Studies and the Department of Biological Sciences in the College of Arts &amp; Sciences at Bowling Green State University is seeking a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Aquatic Microbiology who has an established background in using bioinformatics to investigate how freshwater and/or marine microbial communities influence and are influenced by changes in physical, biological and chemical selective pressures. Candidates who have previously focused on phytoplankton and/or harmful algal bloom ecology are encouraged to apply.</p> <p>The successful candidate will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in fields such as microbiology, genetics, and bioinformatics or other courses that fill departmental needs; supervise master&rsquo;s and Ph.D. students; secure competitive research grants; engage in research that leads to publications in peer-reviewed journals; and provide service to the Department, College, University, professional organizations and the community.</p> <p>Minimum qualifications include a doctorate degree (or ABD with an anticipated graduate day of May 2019), in molecular biology, bioinformatics freshwater microbiology or marine microbiology; demonstrated record of research in using bioinformatics techniques to investigate freshwater and/or marine microbial communities (e.g. publications in peer-reviewed journals); and teaching experience at the collegiate level (e.g. course instructor, teaching assistant, guest lecturer, teaching practicum). This is a 9-month position that starts August 19, 2019. Our cross-departmental research addresses the most critical knowledge gaps with a focus on microbial populations, water quality, land use, and sustainability. Our goal is to provide information that will assist water managers, State and Federal leaders, and the public in understanding the current state of the science. Center faculty will facilitate the translation of research into policies and practices that promote healthy watersheds and protect human and animal health while maximizing ecosystem services, ensuring the long-term sustainability and security of local and global freshwater resources.</p> <p>BGSU is located at the interface of two key agriculturally-dominated western Lake Erie watersheds, Maumee River and Portage River, and is in close proximity to larger population centers of Toledo and Cleveland, OH and Detroit, MI. The Center is composed of affiliate faculty who maintain advanced analytical laboratories, as well as a field research facility at nearby Sandusky Bay. In addition to research, affiliate members prepare students for water-related careers in the private sector, government or academica. Faculty members come from several departments with diverse interests and expertise including environmental microbiology, bioinformatics, phytoplankton ecology, harmful algal blooms, remote sensing and geospatial sciences, hydrology, fish and invertebrate ecology, aquaculture, food web dynamics, climate change, biogeochemistry, toxicology, economics and environmental policy.</p> <p>The successful candidate will join the Center team as a faculty member in the Department of Biological Sciences. The candidate will complement a recent cluster hire in watershed faculty and be able to quickly integrate into ongoing aquatic research in the Laurentian Great Lakes as well as other systems around the world. This work is being led by Associate Professor Timothy W. Davis and Professor George Bullerjahn. Furthermore, recent NSF/NIEHS Oceans and Human Health grant led by Prof. Bullerjahn (see link: <a href="https://www.bgsu.edu/lake-erie-center">https://www.bgsu.edu/lake-erie-center</a>) provides several opportunities to collaborate with many top universities studying watershed sciences and especially dynamics affecting harmful algal blooms in fresh waters.
