Director, Division of Education

Marine Biological Laboratory

Woods Hole, Massachusetts

The Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL), North America’s oldest private marine laboratory, seeks an innovative and ambitious educational and programmatic leader to serve as its next Director of the Division of Education (Director). Recognized as one of the great international centers for investigation and education in the life sciences, the MBL has for over 125 years drawn many of the world’s most accomplished biologists to Woods Hole for research and education programs that are renowned for their intellectual vitality and spirit of collaboration. In 2013, the MBL opened a new chapter in its history by formally affiliating with the University of Chicago (UChicago). Through this partnership, the MBL has enhanced its commitment to education and is poised to pursue new programs.

Through vibrant education and research programs, the MBL supports investigation and instruction spanning a broad range of subject areas. Intensive laboratory-based courses, variable-length immersive educational programs, visiting research programs, and informal colloquia are distinguishing features and well-established strengths of the MBL, as are the collection and cultivation of marine and aquatic organisms. Roughly 20 to 25 Advanced Research Training Courses are offered each year bringing more than 550 students from over 350 institutions and 40 countries to the MBL, and its graduates populate universities worldwide.  The Education Department also delivers a growing number of other education programs that include an undergraduate semester research experience in environmental sciences, summer undergraduate research internships, new educational initiatives with UChicago undergraduate and graduate students, secondary education programs, high school teacher training workshops, and a professional development program for science journalists. Reporting to the Director of the MBL, the Director of Education is responsible for developing an innovative and ambitious vision for all of the MBL’s educational programs. As the administrative lead for education, the Director will oversee long-term financial planning, assure quality of programs through program assessment, and support a vibrant and diverse internal community. The ideal candidate will have experience developing and implementing educational programs, preferably in a higher education or scientific research related organization; have experience securing financial support for education initiatives through grant-funding opportunities; respect and appreciate the breadth of science, education, and other programmatic activities that the MBL supports; and bring a deep professional and personal commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

MBL has engaged Isaacson, Miller, a national executive search firm, to assist in the search. All nominations and applications should be sent in confidence to: John Muckle (jmuckle@imsearch.com) or Randi Alberry (ralberry@imsearch.com). Electronic submission encouraged: www.imsearch.com/6912
