Reporting to the Associate Vice Chancellor and Dean of Students, the Assistant Vice Chancellor supports the goals of the Division of Student Affairs and the University, as well as the University's Strategic Plan by developing and implementing programs and services that support the education, retention and engagement of UC Berkeley students. The Assistant Vice Chancellor will work with Student Affairs leadership and colleagues to support students toward a successful Berkeley student life experience. This position is responsible for strategic and administrative oversight for all aspects of the offices and functions of Residential Life, New Student Services, the LEAD Center, Recreational Sports, and Student Environmental Resource Center to create a Student Engagement Portfolio. The Assistant Vice Chancellor also oversees the development of the First-Year Experience and class identity and young alumni development. The Assistant Vice Chancellor interacts regularly with students, parents/family and community members in formal and informal settings, to learn, experience and inform student culture, opportunities, and concerns. This position will focus on faculty, staff, and alumni engagement in the student activities and the overall student experience. This position may be responsible for the AVC/DoS portfolio in the absence of the Associate Vice Chancellor and Dean of Students. This position involves evening, weekend, and on-call duties.
- Serve as a chief strategist to the Associate Vice Chancellor and Dean of Students and participates as a member of the Dean's central management/leadership team.
- Partners with the AVC/Dean of Students to oversee and direct the AVC/DoS budgets and monitor annual department, program and organizational budgets. Advise the AVC/Dean of Students on budget priorities and opportunities for strategic growth and development.
- Manage and develop budgets, and identify potential funding sources through grants and other opportunities for all areas of oversight. Provide excellent stewardship to efficiently use college resources and grant money.
- Recommends, develops and implements student services policies, procedures and practices which foster and promote student learning and student success, and which support educational programs.
- Handle complex, timely and confidential communications within and across the Division of Student Affairs, the campus, and the Office of the President as it relates to student issues, policies and procedures.
- Serve as a unit liaison to various campus units, student organizations and community organizations.
- Represent the AVC/DoS division at faculty meetings, encouraging collaboration between faculty and student life personnel.
- Engage in vital partnerships with academic affairs to shape an exceptional student experience that demonstrates high levels of student engagement, learning success and leadership opportunities.
- Actively promote equity and social justice through strategic outreach efforts to various student groups encompassing diverse social identities.
- Assist in the educational outreach efforts of AVC/DoS.
- Evaluate presentations and associated materials (publications, videos, etc.) for inclusion in programs; develop new material as needed.
- Conduct research/analysis on items relating to student issues and assessment and write reports suitable for publication in professional journals.
- Supervise and coordinate the work of professional staff ensuring all departments are responsive to student needs and attending to their wellness, ethical, academic and career development of students.
- Determines and establishes organizational structures and supervisory relationships.
- Develop and implement area strategic plans.
STRATEGIC PLANNING AND ASSESSMENT
- Participates with other higher-level managers to establish campus strategic plans and objectives affecting major portions of the AVC/DoS programs on campus.
- Support the Division of Student Affairs and Dean in leading unit-wide assessment and evaluation including data collection, data management, dissemination, and consultation. Use established principles of measurement theory to develop valid and reliable instruments that assess student learning, satisfaction, or evaluation of programs and services. Conduct data analyses using a blend of quantitative and qualitative analysis techniques as necessary.
- Provides leadership in the university community sharing expertise in student development programming, innovative solutions and national best practices.
- Strong strategic planning, budgeting and financial skills demonstrated by successful experience in directing resources toward accomplishment of strategic objectives as well as a successful track record of analysis, program evaluation, budget review, and risk management.

- Superior judgment, demonstrated by the ability to balance numerous demands, evaluate competing priorities, and adjusts planning as needed.
- Significant experience writing, interpreting and revising university policies.
- Exceptional critical thinking skills demonstrated by the ability to analyze information, evaluate results, and facilitate resolution of difficult challenges, including the ability to handle issues of complex and extreme political sensitivity and demonstrate balanced judgment and exceptional discretion.
- Capacity to simultaneously engage multiple issues of very significant legal, policy and operational complexity with an unusually large and diverse number of constituencies.
- A strong student-centered philosophy supported by a strong understanding of student development theory and its application to practice.
- Experience with techniques and foundational theories surrounding the clarification of student values and ethics.
- Strong leadership skills demonstrated by the ability to teach, influence, persuade, and inspire others to take action based on a vision and strategic objectives.
- Excellent organizational and structural skills including the ability to oversee a wide variety of activities, define problems, propose and implement effective solutions and prioritize competing priorities.
- Strong advising and counseling skills essential to mediate conflict, problem-solve, and respond appropriately to student concerns.
- Advanced degree in related area M.Ed or M.S. in Counseling, Education, or related field, with an emphasis in Student Affairs and Higher Education Administration required (PhD, EDD or terminal degree preferred).
Salary & Benefits
Salary is commensurate with experience. Hiring range is $150,000-$174,150/annually.
