Manager, Seismic Analysis

Job Description

The University of Nevada, Reno, Nevada Seismological Laboratory is recruiting for a Seismic Analysis Manager. The position directs the day-to-day development of products derived from the seismic network: setting performance goals, addressing new capabilities, managing the in-house analysis staff, and participating in the prioritizing of field activities. The primary responsibilities are overseeing production of the earthquake catalog and coordinating with staff to address network performance related issues. The incumbent directs the work of full-time record analysts and student analysts to assure a current, high quality earthquake catalog and the delivery of information to the USGS National ‘Comcat’ system. On a 24/7 basis, this positon manages earthquake public response activities (e.g., web postings, moment tensor solutions, review of event locations, press releases, USGS “ShakeMaps”, earthquake products). The position implements earthquake early warning (EEW) capabilities, in coordination with technical staff, in support of the USGS West Coast EEW initiative and participates in outreach activities, as a secondary priority.  The successful candidate will demonstrate a history of developing grants/contracts and completing technical reports that meet sponsor deliverables.   This position conducts earthquake research, including securing support for graduate student research, in conjunction with seismic network obligations, as time allows.

Required Qualifications

Master Degree and 2 years of related work experience or Ph.D. and 1 year of related work experience. Related Experience: seismic network operations management; experience with related data, computer systems, software and hardware.

Preferred Qualifications

Basic understanding of earthquake seismology; experience in the collection and/or processing of large geophysical data sets; experience with scripting and/or programming languages; experience in developing research and/or data collection related grants/contracts.

Department Information

The Nevada Seismological Laboratory is a research division within the College of Science at the University of Nevada, Reno. The Laboratory has overall responsibility for instrumental studies of earthquakes in the Nevada region. The laboratory operates a statewide network of seismographic stations and investigates the sizes, frequencies of occurrence, and distribution of earthquakes in the region, and other problems related to seismic risk in Nevada.
The Laboratory disseminates seismic information to the public and regularly publishes research results. It serves as a data repository and a resource for the public on matters related to earthquake activity and earthquake risks in Nevada and adjoining states. The laboratory also handles grant- and contract-supported research on seismic problems of national and international importance, and interacts closely with the University of Nevada Reno Department of Geological Sciences and Engineering to prepare well-educated professionals for careers in seismology.
