Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs

Northern State University (NSU) invites nominations and expressions of interest in the position of provost and vice president for academic affairs. NSU is one of six universities in the South Dakota Regental University System. The university seeks an innovative, strategic, proactive academic leader with a collaborative and empowering leadership style to advance all facets of NSU’s academic sector.

 

This position serves on NSU’s Senior Cabinet and reports directly to the president. Cabinet membership includes vice president for finance and administration, vice president for enrollment management and student affairs, director of intercollegiate athletics, director of communications and marketing, vice president for technology and chief information officer, and the president and CEO of the NSU Foundation.

 

Northern serves nearly 3,500 students, including approximately 200 international students, from its picturesque 75-acre campus, located in Aberdeen, a thriving community of 29,000 on the South Dakota plains. NSU is a premier residential university characterized by outstanding instruction, extraordinary community relations and wide-ranging extracurricular opportunities. The university is dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in the liberal arts and in graduate and professional education.

 

The university’s primary sources of support are state appropriations and tuition and fees. Other major sources include the Northern State University Foundation, federal funds (grants and awards) and auxiliary services. The total FY19 operating budget is approximately $42 million and the Foundation manages assets of more than $50 million.

The provost leads all academic aspects of the university and is expected to effectively collaborate with all other areas from within the university and to develop a regional presence with academic and community partners. Duties include facilitating faculty and curriculum development; managing academic budgets, in collaboration with the vice president for finance and administration; academic accreditation; sponsored research and contracts; continuing, adult and online education; and academic support services. The provost will oversee all of the academic schools and colleges, working closely with the deans and faculty to achieve program and university goals.
