The University of California, Davis and UC Davis Health invite nominations and applications for the position of Chair of the Department of Neurology. A key leader in UC Davis Health, the new Chair will build on the success of prior leadership, leveraging the talents of a diverse faculty, staff, and students, to chart continued success and increased national and international reputation of the department’s important academic endeavors.

The Dean and the Vice Chancellor for Human Health Sciences seek a Chair who will maintain and enhance the phenomenal success that the department has experienced over the past six years while driving innovation in the field of neuroscience more broadly. Continuing alignment with an institutional commitment to diversity and educational opportunity, the new Chair will also act as a conduit between and contributor to a variety of other successful departments, centers, and institutes focused on neuroscience that are well established and growing at UC Davis. Finally, the Chair will strategically leverage the sizeable reach and accomplishments of UC Davis Health, ensuring the department and the institution continue to rise in intellectual impact, effective problem solving, and effective and efficient delivery of clinical care across a sprawling, diverse geographic region in Northern California -- and beyond.

The next Chair of the Department of Neurology will build upon the department’s history of excellence and innovation and will work to further advance a vision centered upon expanding the department’s local, national, and international footprint. The Chair will enhance the department’s internal operations while also improving campus-wide partnerships and external relationships. To be successful in these areas, the next Chair will be expected to address a set of key opportunities and challenges: 

  • Develop a vision to lead the Department of Neurology forward through new partnerships and expanded educational opportunities;
  • Continue to effectively lead a successful group of dedicated colleagues and collaborators;
  • Promote a culture of equity and inclusion and support new diversity initiatives;
  • Build out a robust clinical strategy that delivers quality care and develops distinctive competitive niches in a highly competitive market;
  • Broaden, enhance and grow the Department’s academic and research portfolio and multidisciplinary initiatives;
  • Engage collaboratively across campus to cement UC Davis Health as a leader in neuroscience;
  • Recruit and retain a talented, diverse, and comprehensive faculty;
  • Determine and strengthen sustainable funding models with increased resource generation.
