Dean, College of Natural Sciences, Forestry, and Agriculture and Director, MAFES
The University of Maine invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the College of Natural Sciences, Forestry, and Agriculture (NSFA), and Director of the Maine Agricultural and Forest Experiment Station (MAFES).
The College of Natural Sciences, Forestry, and Agriculture is UMaine’s largest academic college and includes programs related to understanding and responsible management of Maine’s and the world’s natural resources. The College also has significant strengths in the health sciences professions. The College consists of twelve academic units that offer academic programs at both the undergraduate and graduate level. The College offers a diversity of programs taught by a faculty that represents the largest assemblage of scientific expertise in Maine. There are more than 150 scientists in the College and about two-thirds are supported by, and work on, projects within the Maine Agricultural and Forest Experiment Station.
The Dean is the chief executive officer of the College and reports to the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost. The Dean/Director provides leadership for the College and the Station and fosters excellence in teaching, research, and service to the state. This leader will oversee fiscal, strategic, academic, research, public service, and personnel matters and implement the College’s commitment to diversity. The Dean represents the College, MAFES, and the University to external agencies, constituents, and legislative delegations at the local, state, and federal levels. The Dean/Director actively participates in the University’s fundraising initiatives. The Dean/Director partners with Cooperative Extension to meet the discovery and educational outreach needs of Maine through Land and Sea Grant efforts.
Candidates must have a record of effective administrative leadership, including management of personnel and budget, and demonstrated effectiveness in the acquisition of public and private resources to develop and expand strong programs. Preferred qualifications include demonstrated accomplishments in teaching, research, professional and public service; knowledge of the missions and applications of a Land Grant Institution and State Agricultural and/or Forest Experiment Station; documented ability to work effectively with both State and Federal Congressional delegations; experience with federal agencies; and experience in marketing academic programs and recruiting students. Individuals must have a doctorate related to the disciplines represented in the College, with credentials and experience to qualify for the rank of professor with tenure in a discipline within the College.
