President Search

California State University San Marcos (CSU San Marcos), one of the newest campuses within a 23-campus system, seeks an inspiring and innovative leader to serve as its fourth President. Working in collaboration with CSU San Marcos leadership, faculty, students, and staff, the President will serve as a unifying leader in strategically guiding the college forward during a critical period of growth.

Since its founding in 1989 as the CSU’s 20th campus, CSU San Marcos has grown to serve 17,000 students across its four colleges, with 43 undergraduates and 25 graduate programs. A comprehensive public university that offers rigorous academic programs, the campus prides itself on exemplary teaching, innovative curricula, and the application of new technologies. CSU San Marcos is also a national model for student access and success; 53% of graduates were the first in their families to earn a bachelor’s degree, and 78% of graduates have a job within six months of graduation.

Located on a beautiful hillside campus approximately eight miles east of the Pacific Ocean and 35 miles from downtown San Diego, CSU San Marcos grounds its mission in the public trust, alignment with regional needs, and sustained enrichment of the intellectual, civic, economic, and cultural life of the region and state. The University is committed to meeting the needs of a rapidly growing region, expanding and thriving with a pioneering and entrepreneurial spirit.

The CSU system is the largest and most diverse university system in the country and one of the most affordable. Reporting to the Chancellor of the CSU System, the President serves as the chief academic and administrative officer for the San Marcos campus. The successful candidate must embrace the campus values of intellectual engagement, community, integrity, innovation, and inclusiveness. The next President will provide visionary leadership in concert with CSUSM’s focus on the student as an active participant in the learning process.
