About the Role
The Associate Vice Chancellor is part of the Office for Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) at Vanderbilt University and serves as a key member of the leadership team responsible for providing support, direction and guidance on achieving the goals of the Office for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. Working with Vice Chancellors and other stakeholders, the Associate Vice Chancellor will play a key role in advancing equity, diversity and inclusion at Vanderbilt.

Reporting directly to the Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, the Associate Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion will serve as a thought leader in developing a support model of equity, diversity and inclusion at all levels and provide intellectual, strategic visionary and collaborative institutional leadership to facilitate an integrated vision and shared responsibility for advancing institutional goals and for fostering and affirming a campus culture to achieve the university goals surrounding equity, diversity and inclusion.

About the Work Unit
Our office works to intentionally foster institutional equity, diversity and inclusion by creating educational opportunities, raising awareness and providing strategies and tools to bring to life the vision of inclusive excellence, both on our campus and in our city. The goal of our office is to help our community better understand one another so we can appreciate our differences, celebrate our common goals and work together toward inclusive excellence.  Our office also collaborates with Vice Provost for Inclusive Excellence to advance equity, diversity and inclusion in the university’s research and educational missions, creating a welcoming environment for students, faculty and staff.

Key Functions and Expected Performance:

  • Provide vision, leadership, management, assessment, and strategic planning for the design and implementation of an institution-wide framework and efforts that ensure diversity, inclusion, equity, and respect for all staff
  • Facilitate and share best practices for enhancing inclusivity, engagement, and cultural proficiency at Vanderbilt University
  • Serve as a strategic consultant to senior administrators and department leaders to support diversity and inclusion efforts in their areas.
  • Work closely with the Chancellor and Vice Chancellor on the implementation of the recommendations of the Chancellor’s Committee on Diversity, Inclusion and Community
  • Assist in the development and implementation of goals and objectives for the Office for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion based on interpretation of institutional policy and goals
  • Prepare analysis of data and other evidence related to the progress of the institution in equity, diversity and inclusion
  • Ensure the most effective operations of the Office for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion through program development, process improvement and coordination/integration of processes with other departments; Be available for listening and information sessions with faculty, staff, and students, gathering input for the direction of the Office for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion; serve as representative for the Vice Chancellor in his absence
  • Assist in creating an organizational culture (both within and across departments) that provides a safe, enriching and inclusive environment for faculty, employees and students and provides a qualified, competent team to meet those needs.

Supervisory Relationships:
This position has overall supervisory responsibility; this position reports administratively and functionally to the Vice Chancellor for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.

Education and Certifications:

  • A Master’s degree in a related field from an accredited institution of higher education is necessary.
  • 5+ years of experience designing and implementing equity, diversity and inclusion initiatives at an institution or organization of similar size and complexity is necessary.
  • Advanced education/training in diversity-related field is necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Demonstrated success with infusing diversity and inclusion practices within a professional setting; particularly adept at collaborating with others who have varying perceptions of diversity and inclusion with sensitivity to multicultural variances within one organization
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and a demonstrated ability to effectively communicate in a diverse environment; an ability to work effectively trans-institutionally both as an organizational leader and valued colleague; strong emotional intelligence and interpersonal skills, including the ability to influence all levels of an organization through a consultative methodology
  • History of thought leadership as demonstrated through publications, presentations, or other means of communication
  • Work effectively as a leader or member of a team, task force, or committee, and manage conflict and build consensus; demonstrable ability to lead through influence
  • Discretion and good judgment to appropriately handle confidential information
