Job Ad for Sound Design, Post-Production Sound/Scoring

San Francisco State University’s School of Cinema offers an exciting opportunity for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Sound Design, Mixing, Post-Production and/or Film Scoring beginning August 2019. We seek a colleague with expertise producing sound and/or scoring for a range of visual media platforms including film, digital and streaming platforms, interactive media, VR, animation, gaming formats or other emerging media formats, and who can teach across fiction, non-fiction, experimental or hybrid forms. We seek a specialist who can guide students in sound creation, recording, editing, effects, mixing and/or composing for film. We are especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute, through their research, teaching, and/or service, to enhancing the diversity and overall excellence of the academic community.

The School of Cinema was founded amid the political activism and artistic experimentation of the 1960s. Today, as then, the School of Cinema is committed to a curriculum that recognizes cinema to be an independent, powerful and unique medium in the world. Our programs combine theory and practice, and students are encouraged to engage in scholarship and to pursue production in all forms, modes and mediums of cinematic expression.

Responsibilities:

The position requires graduate and undergraduate teaching in production and post-production sound, mentoring and advising graduate and undergraduate students, developing an active ongoing body of creative work in one’s area of specialty, and ongoing committee and service assignments. Qualifications:

Required:

  • MFA in Cinema or a related field

or

  • Equivalent professional experience as an active filmmaker and/or sound designer/mixer

and

  • Record of teaching cinema sound production and post-production across a broad spectrum of cinematic and media arts at both the undergraduate and graduate levels
  • Active body of work related to sound production and post-production
  • Record of working and communicating effectively with colleagues and students

Preferred:

  • Demonstrated ability to incorporate inclusion, diversity, and educational equity in teaching, and/or scholarship/creative works
  • Experience teaching and working closely with students from historically under-represented communities
  • Record of contributing to collegial, supportive and collaborative work environments
  • Record of providing leadership in developing curriculum in the area of sound design/mixing

Rank and Salary:

Assistant Professor of Cinema. Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. The California State University (CSU) provides generous health, retirement and other benefits.
