Dean of Library and Information Access

San Diego State University (SDSU) invites applications, nominations and expressions of interest in the position of Dean of Library and Information Access.

The SDSU Library https://library.sdsu.edu/  is deeply committed to information literacy, lifelong learning, and creative endeavors in a welcoming and collaborative environment. The Library houses a collection of nearly two million physical items, provides access to numerous electronic resources and offers a variety of user-focused services, including over 600 public workstations, a computing hub, electronic classrooms, a digital humanities center and build IT: a student-run makers space designed to foster creativity and innovation. Special Collections and University Archives holds over 80,000 printed volumes, over 500 manuscripts and archival collections, 800 linear feet of university records, numerous graphic and ephemera collections, and digital collections.

The next Dean of the Library will join the university at a critical juncture as it lays the groundwork for the next era of growth and achievement. With the arrival of a new president in summer 2018, Dr. Adela de la Torre, the university is developing an inspiring vision built on the three pillars of Global Citizenry, Compassionate Leadership, and Ethical Innovation.  In addition to understanding the fundamental role of the library, the successful candidate will possess the visionary capacity to identify and develop information technologies, digital access to journals and scholarly work and integrate those technologies with traditional library collections and services.

The Dean is the chief administrative officer for the Library and Information Access, and reports to the Provost and Senior Vice President and serves as a member of the Academic Deans Council. The dean will serve as an integral partner with leadership across the schools and colleges, supporting interdisciplinary areas of research and collaboration. Student learning and success should be at the forefront of the new dean's priorities, while also supporting an increase in research activity and scholarship.

The University Librarian and Dean must have a substantial record of personal excellence related to the oversight and management of all aspects of library operations, including budget, personnel, facilities, technology, policy development, instruction, fundraising and co-curricular programming. The incoming dean should be someone who brings a spirit of partnership and transparency as well as an understanding of and respect for the unique shared governance structure of SDSU that equally incorporates faculty, staff and student voices in the decision-making process.

An earned M.L.S. from an accredited ALA Institution or equivalent is required. A second Master's degree or Ph.D. or equivalent preferred.
