An invitation to apply for the position of

Dean, School of Public Health and Health Sciences

University of Massachusetts Amherst

Amherst, Massachusetts

The University of Massachusetts Amherst seeks a visionary, strategic, and collaborative leader to serve as Dean of the School of Public Health and Health Sciences (SPHHS). This is an opportunity to lead a strong unit that has seen significant growth in recent years. Ranked 25 by U.S. News & World Report, SPHHS encompasses three departments in Public Health (Biostatistics and Epidemiology, Environmental Health Sciences, and Health Promotion and Policy) and three in Health Sciences (Kinesiology, Communication Disorders, and Nutrition). Over the last decade, SPHHS has nearly doubled the size of its faculty, strengthened its research profile, increased student enrollments by 75 percent, and amassed a significant reserve.

The largest public university in New England and the flagship of the University of Massachusetts system, UMass Amherst has more than 1,300 full-time tenure and non-tenure track faculty. It serves nearly 23,400 undergraduates (from 78 countries and every state in the union) and approximately 7,000 graduate students. Total research and development expenditures were $160 million in 2016, approximately one third of the $632 million in research and development expenditures across the University of Massachusetts system. Two years removed from a record-breaking capital campaign, UMass Amherst has undertaken over $1.4 billion in new construction and renovations with substantial investments in the sciences, all with public and private support.

The next Dean will join the School at a propitious moment. UMass Amherst intends to be among the top twenty public institutions of higher learning in the nation. The University is in the midst of an ambitious strategic plan, which sets forth goals for student success, collaborations on and off campus, the pursuit and application of knowledge for the betterment of society, and the strengthening of a community of diversity, inclusion, and mutual respect. These goals are particularly relevant for SPHHS, and it is expected that the School can and must play a critical role in their attainment. The Dean will work closely with the faculty, staff, and students of SPHHS to present a unified vision of the School that serves UMass Amherst's students, extends its impact through cooperative and cross-unit initiatives, nurtures its collegial culture, and expands its influence and service beyond the campus. In all these endeavors the Dean will be an inclusive and transparent leader, and a tireless champion and advocate of the School.
